Ok, so after a bit of a mishap on Friday night my OH talked me into visiting A&E last night. I'd basically managed to lump myself round the head and ear with some wood, had a bit of discharge from the ear so she was worried.

After about 40 minutes there they told me I had perforated an ear drum and also had a bit of concussion, so apologies if this doesn't make sense. Is there anything I can do to try help repair the ear? I'm still in quite a bit of pain, and the area is still swollen. The doctor mentioned I might need an operation on it.

Anyone had similar, or can anyone offer advise?

Have you been referred to someone? Most perforations repair themselves, just keep your ear very dry. No swimming, put cotton wool in ear when showering etc.

Yup, I've done that. st myself when I felt liquid coming out of my ear and found out it was blood!

Just had a week or so of muffled hearing and it improved to the extent that it was exactly the same as it was before it happened.

I don't know the extent to which you've damaged yours, but from what little I know the eardrum is very much the same as any other piece of skin, inasmuch that if you damage it, it'll repair itself quite happily.

Not sure you can do anything to help it other than to have some rest and eat a little more protein!

Did mine last october diving. Was a bit muffled for a month, lots of strange inner ear noises for a few weeks then back to normal.

As everyone has said, keep it dry. I found cotton wool in my ear followed by a dollop of vaseline on top of that kept it moisture free.

The only issue i had longish term was being around very loud noises - caused a bit of a throb. Thats settled now.

Sounds strange but... Did you ever have grommet's when you were younger? These can cause scaring of the ear drum that may mean a longer healing time.

hopefully you will heal up nicely buddy - but more worrying would be your ability to lump yourself around the head with some wood - isn't that like terretts or something???

Nope, but I did/do DJ, so it could be that the monitors and headphones have semi buggered my ears up anyway.

The doctor said to keep it dry, all this happened on friday, after seeing the blood i stuck my ear under the shower to get it out, didnt go to hospital while at least 48 hours later. Got advised to use silicone ear plugs, loud noises are still hurting but the ear plugs are helping so far.

Got constant ringing at several different frequencies too, which as annoying when trying to sleep.

Now for how it happened, I was cutting some wood with an electric saw, the battery ran out so i double foot jumped on the half cut piece. It split in two, half came up and lumped me. Hard.

I can assure you my ear isn't normaly this fat:
