Gonna make us look like morons. First, we're trying to encourage people to get into sport via the Olympic Shames and then we tax anyone who is enthusiastic about it. Arse/elbow. And unhealthy food is VAT free, isn't it? 
Still, I make my own sports drinks as I got fed up with paying OTT prices.

Here's me thinking this area of the forum had open minds about these kinds of things... How wrong was I?! I think the issue here isn't that they are taxing my hobby and your hobby gets taxed as above, it's a little closer to the point that the Government are trying to levy a tax on area's of food where there previously haven't been without any need to be doing.
The issue here is that we are trying to push a healthy lifestyle, these nutrition drinks make it much easier too and now they gain in popularity they are being taxed. Especially within the year of the Olympics. What kind of a message does that send to people? Keep getting fatter?
I don't really know what to say about it all. I think that it is fundamentally wrong and seems like it could be the start to taxing ALL foods. If it were that way, it would be much easier. Not picking and choosing the types of food that is produced and sold within the industry.

I keep my protein intake pretty well thanks, primarily chicken & turkey breast, fish and shellfish. It's not difficult, nor terribly expensive.
ETA. Where does protein come into the issue anyway? The petition appears to be about 'sports nutrition drinks'; not clear whether it's lucozade, protein shakes or full fat milk.

If any message is being sent, then its the one that nutrition drinks are an overpriced luxury and that you don't need them to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Just out of interest are "sports" drinks like Redbull and Monster already liable for vat? If they are then I think proper sports nutrition should be tax exempt as it pays back for its self over time in less costs to the nhs.
If Redbull and others aren't liable for vat then they should be, they are usually used in conjunction with vodka and so not healthy whatsoever.
