Want to lose weight, have no will power
Discussion
I really want to lose a lot of weight, but I have zero will power.
I find it hard to get myself motivated to exercise, once I start some exercise I'm ok, it's the initial getting of my arse and getting going that I find hard.
I like walking, but the wife can't go with me as she is disabled, so I tend to quit after a few miles.
How do you motivate yourself to lose weight.
BTW I am 35 and weigh 21 stone, I have always been overweight, but I am diabetic, broke my back 20 years ago (luckily no spinal cord damage) I am a father of 6 and have a grand child, so I have a lot of reasons to need to lose the weight, yet even all that doesn't give me the kick up the backside that I need

Dont worry about the exercise at first. Look at what youre eating.
If you have an iphone theres a great app called 'myfitnesspal' which is easy to use and allows you to keep track of what you eat.
Don't be too strict. Make small changes and have a treat once a week - a good treat. Don't feel guilty about it and don't get caught in the trap of thinking 'oh, I've fallen off the wagon, I might as well now make the most of it'. If you have a bad day / night - it's ok.
Try not to think of it as a diet - if you do, you'll fail. It's a change in lifestyle.
You will start to feel better and you will hit a point when you do want to start exercising. Take it easy as your body won't be used to it. Find something you enjoy doing. Don't get hung up on the calories burnt - any exercise is good.
Would type more but limited time.
I went from 22 stone to 15 following the above.

NEED but Won't, or Can't, because you find it hard.
This is about NOT giving in. NEVER giving up.
See a doctor first, to make sure no underlying problem - my sister had an underactive thyroid, and now it's being treated she's starting to loose weight.
Okay. Number 1
Calorie Intake ? 4000 a Day. (My guess)
You need to get it below 1400 a day. If you do no exercise, you only need 1500, so to loose weight, you have to get below that figure
To do that you'll be hungry.
All the cakes and biscuits and crisps, and beer and s
t have to be replaced by a Carrot stick. ONE carrot stick, and a slice of ham. Number 2. Weigh Yourself Everyday.
Plot on a graph.
EVERYDAY. If it doesn't drop at least 1Lb every 3 days then EAT less.
Number 3. Exercise. Not too much, but do something everyday.
Do something for someone else. Contact AgeUK or the Local Church and find out if any old person needs a dog walking. See it like a job. Everyday, you walk that dog for an hour.
Number 4. Write the list of why being fat will kill you and why you want to live, and not die.
I weight 103 kilos and my basic metabolic rate for one day is 2400 cals. Thats what I need if I dont move and lie in bed all day. So I do move and go to the gym...where I burn at least 750 cals daily. I use the Livestrong app for the iphone which plots cals in and burnt. I'd reccommend it and all weithloss starts in the kitchen. Sort that out first and add on the exercise when you're ready. Record everything that gores into your mouth..EVERYTHING...snacks and drinks. If ypu dont know the cals..Google will help you! After a while you will change you noshing by simply reading the energy in everything that you consume. I now know how much exerciseing it takes to use up the cals from a sandwich. Makes you refrain from eating such crap! Thats enough willpower.
It's likely that the key change to make is diet - which I'll leave others to advise on.
In terms of exercise, you will find it far far easier if you can exercise with someone else. There are various options for this - a friend, a Personal Trainer, gym classes or something like circuit training are the obvious ones (whereabouts in the country are you?). If you pick the right group exercise there will be other people at your level and you really will get a massive boost....basically you need the motivation to turn up at class, and then someone else deals with your motivation! Some of these may sound unsuitable, but trsut me there are plenty of people of your ages and ability doing this.
Once you commit to diet and exercise changes, you will find it progressively easier. It may take a few weeks, but once you start to feel improvements it should become self perpetuating as you have more to lose by stopping.
Good luck - if you want it enough you'll find the willpower.

I've gone from 84kg to 79kg in a month by giving up bread, pasta, potatoes and rice. I've increased my intake of meat, fish, low-carb vegetables and fruit. A nice steady weight reduction, less gut problems (probably due to a slight wheat intolerance) and improved libido! My Mum reckoned I have a good complexion too, and she knew nothing of this new lifestyle.
Oh, some motivational pictures for you all:

How do you know this. I thought the average was 2000 for men, and 1500 for women. englisharcher said:

Back on topic, as requested, have you looked at low carb diets? Not necessarily hardcore Atkins 20g carbs a day, but even 150g of carbs a day will show improvements if you're overweight. I understand that low carb diets are good for diabetics but DYOR!How do you motivate yourself to lose weight.

One advantage of low carb diets is that you can eat as much as you want of everything else... just go easy on the carbs.
