Hi everyone.

Over the last few months, i've been getting random hand cramps. Nothing too serious initially, but recently, it's been getting worse. Occasionally, my hand starts to 'claw up'. I went to my GP, who prescribed me with Quinine, but they haven't been effective. I can't help but feel i've been fobbed off.

It gets a lot worse when i'm writing. As i have my final exams in a month, i'm getting a little concerned because writing becomes very uncomfortable and becomes less and less legible, which is obviously not good in in my current situation. Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips to alleviate the problem? Painkillers before each exam? hehe

Any help would be much appreciated.

banghead of course! how did i not get that? More worryingly, how did my doctor not? It sounds remarkably similar to what i'm experiencing.

Thanks!

Doesn't sound like carpal tunnel to me, and I've suffered with it for years. Normal symptoms are numbness and deadness in certain fingers of the hand, not cramps.

You might find you simply need more salt in your diet. Do you work out and sweat much? I used to get cramps like yours when eating with a knife and fork, when I worked in a sweaty tropical job. A sprinkle of salt on my food and it stopped. Bananas help too apparently.

Carpal tunnel tends to affect me more at night, though I had the operation on one hand a couple of years ago and that is virtually trouble free now.

If it's getting regularly hard to straighten one or more fingers, as in the sensation that something's going to tear or break if you force it (not just stiffness or pain), there is a small possibility that it could be something like Dupuytren's contracture. SMALL possibility - it's not common and something like carpal tunnel or good old tendonitis is much more probable, especially with having recently done lots of writing, so don't panic.

Regardless, if it hasn't got better with what your doctor prescribed, you need to go back and talk to them again and give them a chance to keep looking into it.
