I seem to make most decisions based on advice and recommendations of PHers but didnt find that much helpful stuff on here so thought I would share my experience of having the snip 5 days ago. lon post, , but hopefully useful. Colleagues have all been very interested.

I'm only 30 but with three kids and don't want any more. Some people said what if I split from my wife and wanted more kids etc. My take has been I don't intend to split from the mrs and our family is complete, so I did it. Maybe this will prove to be wrong but, as much as you can plan, it was the right decision.

So, about 3 weeks ago I went to a counselling session with an nhs doctor. He told me all about the procedure, but being a little freaked out by blood and guts, I nearlly passed out when he explained what he was going to do and I had to have a lie down on his examination bed. Pathetic. We talked more and he then examined me down below. I think he was impressed by my testes, saying this would be an easy one, but was probably less impressed by my penis which had gone into hiding. Still, the opposite reaction would have been worse. The doc was nice, and his bedside manner put me at ease. The way he skillfully rolled my penis out the way with the back of his hand without having to really touch it told me this was a man who knew how to handle men's privates.

Even on the nhs, he could fit me in 2weeks later but I waited a month to allow time to organise time off work etc. on the morning of the procedure I did some work on my bike to take my mind off it before giving myself a Brazilian. Next 5 mins spent in front of mirror trying to work out if I now looked more powerfully built, or like a 9year old.

At the doctors I was ushered into the doctors room, wife in tow who had come along to watch. Reminding him I was pathetic, I told him to just get on with it. Penis taped up out of the way, off we went. Injection in the sac smarted but after the anaesthetic took effect I felt no pain. The only thing I felt was a tugging of my pipes inside my body. A weird feeling, but no pain.

I got through the procedure fine, i wasnt at all worried and didn't pass out! Weirdly, its talking about it I find worse. No stitches for the 1cm cuts and with a wedge of dressings stuffed down two pairs of tight fitting pants I left with a john wayne swagger after 30 mins and a cup of tea. In and out in just over an hour.

Then the pain started, although more aching. Not like the first 20seconds after taking a smack to the balls and you foolishly think you got away with it, or the minute of agony that follows, but the same as the 2 mins aching after that. The doctor said length of recovery depended on how much rest you got so I had the next 2 days off work with my feet up. 5 days on, my balls are still black but the soreness has all but gone unless they get knocked.

I have to give 2 samples in 3 and 4 months time to check it worked. Before then I need to 'clean the pipes'. 30 times apparently. With the mrs listening to his orders I wondered if the doc was doing me a favour! I won't bother updating on my progress.

Ha, not much any more, especially with a breastfeeding 4 month old! Which is why I was so happy with the 30 figure, under doctors orders! It wont happen though.

Not sure if its what I have written or if you guys are wimps too and just cringing at the thought, but I was trying to say it isnt painful! Sure I have had some soreness, but it really has been ok.

Pah! whimps the lot of you and it doesn't always go well. Had mine done at 10 am, had another op at 1pm to try and stop the bleeding from the first op, the anaesthetic on the second go didn't work very well and I've never known pain like it before or since. Apart from that and 2 days in hospital, 6 weeks off work and another visit to have fluid drained after 4 weeks I was fine about two months later.

Well done to the OP for deciding that three is a fair share.

Most of the time vascectomies are relatively painless and the aftermath is a bit uncomfortable but not as bad as that. Compared to the alternatives it's by far and away the best way.

3 years ago here. Decided a weekend of achy balls was much less painful than another £250k in child raising costs. Same as OP, had three and didn't want any more. Dr. Contractor (not kidding) was very efficient, and I even managed not to embarrass myself in front of his stunning nurse assistant.

Best move I could ever have made for my sex life. Remember when you were just married, before kids, and still going at it hammer and tongs every chance you got? The kitchen, the living room, the lazy mornings, lunch time quickies?

Well, it's not like that.

It is however, a hell of a lot better than it was, and not having to think about birth control is such a blessing.

Had the snip 6 years ago, when I was 24. Had the reversal 2 months ago. Trust me, any pain in the snip pales into insignificance alongside the agony that was getting fixed!
And women say childbirth is hard!!

I've had it done, but that doesn't stop my wife thinking I've got her pregnant.

Her periods have never been very regular, and I guess that now she's pre-menapausal, so the other week when she was 7 weeks late, she insisted I go and buy a pregnancy testing kit, which proved that she's not pregnant.

I'm amazed you found a doctor prepared to give you a vasectomy at the age of 24 for the very reason you've demonstrated yourself! Most blokes' outlook on life changes almost as much between 24 and 34 as it does between 14 and 24.

The doctor who did mine had a rather nice Morgan, with photos of it and other old cars on the wall of the treatment room. It's rather surreal having a conversation with a chap about taking his Morgan to Monte Carlo whilst he's stabbing you in the knackers.

Although my view on Morgans wasn't overly impacted by the procedure, I do have an infinitely greater hatred of Toyota Carinas - and the minicab drivers who manage to drive them more jerkily than a London bus - after the anesthetic wore off on the way home. Still, he probably didn't like me headbutting his dashboard either.
