Plantar Facia?

My wife has just been diagnosed with this. (Almost) completely out of the blue, she is in serious pain, not to say agony in her right foot; can't put any weight on it, and at the moment can't walk at all. The doctor's suggested decent shoes for starters and possibly heel and/or arch supports. Has anybody had any experience that they can share? What's worked, what's worth trying? Thanks in anticipation.

I have had it in my right sole / heel.
Chuffing painful it was too.
I tried resting it, but work meant that I was on my feet.

I had to have a steroid injection into it which hurt like billy-o, but cleared it up fairly quickly.
