I don't think this belongs in FDR as it's the health angle.

Has anyone seen the Beet It sports drinks. I saw a programme about it other week on the BBC. They put a guy on an static bike and got him to go all out, taking blood samples and monitoring oxygen levels etc.

He maxed out after 8 mins.

Then he was told to rest and return the next day to do a comparison. the difference was he was given some Beet It shots, 7cl of concentrated beetroot juice to take 1-2 hours before.

When he returned he was able to sustain a high performance level and endurance and went for 12 mins ( I think) His bloods and stats showed about a 18-20% in capacity and performance. The thought behind it is that beetroot contains a lot of natural nitrates, apparently enabling the blood to deliver better levels of oxygen, Its also cited as lowering blood pressure.

Having watched this I got some juice, not the shots ( I have since ordered some ) the juice tastes rough, but I necked 33cl before a ride, had my usual brekkie, and a banana, I then set the fastest time I have done over a 45k loop, and a very fast initial 25k, ..

so I'm hooked. Hopefully its a good thing.

Has anyone else had a go?

I've heard good things about it health-wise but not sports-specific eg antioxidant(?), antibiotic effect IIRC. I only eat the stuff fresh, though, rather than in shots. Do the shots taste the same?

Sticks.

Heard about the benefits on TV recently so bought some capsules at H&B, mainly thinking of improved circulation and better recovery after gym. No noticeable difference so far tbh.

I include beets in my roasted vegetable mix.
I also do a 'red veg mix'; beets, red cabbage and red onions. lick

Piss gets a bit purple though. hehe

I got some last week after seeing that show. I posted about it in the running thread on here. I've drank a few bottles and done some training runs just to see if it agreed with me. It tastes horrible but I plan to try some before the next race.

As do your poo's I must admit I thought jesus maybe time for a colonoscopy as soon as I looked down, purple turds.

I'll let you know what the shots taste like, they haven't arrived yet, the juice to be honest is rank.

I'm trying to remember there programme I watched, I will have a rummage around and try and link something in..

hehe Same as what I thought after I ate three whole beetroots the previous night. I woulda pooped myself upon looking down if it wasn't for the fact I'd already pooped.

I drink loads of it as it seems to help lower my BP. Used to buy 8 packs from Amazon but now Ocado do it online so I can get it with my weekly shopping.

HATED it at first, even the smell made me gag. It's since grown on me and can quite easily neck a pint.

Beware of red 'output' though. Can be quite alarming! biggrin

I must be the only one who actually likes beetroot (or is the juice different?).

Beetroot is quite high in oxalic acid. Irritating to the gastrointestinal tract and a risk factor for kidney stones. I juiced some beetroots when we used to get the veg box delivered and the damn things were piling up uneaten. It was quite nice mixed with pear, apple and carrot, but drinking a pint of that gave me a sore throat.
