Had some blood tests done which covered things like liver and kidney finction, and the doc just called to advise my kidney function is 58, and wants to have further tests done.

No idea what this means, but from googling it is quite low (40 years old), and Im more than a little worried about what it could potentially indicate.

Can anyone advise on how serious this could potentially be, and anyone else had similar results from a test?

Could be as little as you were dehydrated the day of the test - as such the first thing they'll do is retest you.

Until that's done, really don't worry.

Thanks, Im terrible with this sort of thing, been panicking all morning and reading all sorts of worrying things on google, should be having the 2nd test in a couple weeks so will know more.

Just out of morbid curiosity, how bad would a score of 58 be for a 40 year old?

I'm not a medic, but also, you haven't told us what your score of 58 is for - there are lots of different things they measure for kidney function! Might be creatinine or GFR glom...something filtration rate which is derived from creatinine levels (don't ask me how, I study microbes not people...)

A few years ago I got a really, really nasty infection (pyelonephritis) which had a high chance of kidney damage - dodged that bullet but thats where my very very limited knowledge of this stuff comes from.

If it's stressing you out, ring your GP surgery up, ask for a 'phone consultation and have a chat. S/he will at least be able to tell you what numbers you're hoping for and what the most likely explanations are.

Yep, that'll do it. Have you read anything that hasn't indicated you're a dead man walking yet?

Nope, google is pretty much unanimous that Im in trouble deep. One interestuing thing I read is how large amounts of protein can damage the kidneys, and over the years Ive downed a serious amount of protein shakes, might have contributed.

I wish it was alcohol levels, could go for a world record, be pretty impressive to have a 58% blood alcohol level...

I was going to have a bottle of Singha tonight too, now dont feel like it frown

I know that it's easier said than done but don't rely on google searches to make you fear the worst.

Wait until your Doctor tells you what's up. It could be nothing at all to be concerned about, maybe even a faulty test.

I got really dehydrated when I caught food poisoning, and my kidney function dropped below 50, Creatinine level of 192

Its recovered now, but is still on the higher side of normal (50 year old)

There is not a lot that can be done in my case - stay hydrated and also keep your blood pressure in the "Excellent" arena

Not sure what the cause of your low reading will be, but a friend of mine only has one kidney so presumably only 50% effectiveness max, and it has no impact on him :-)

I would not stress too much about it - find out from the Doctors what they think the cause is - until then its all speculation - it could just be dehydration

Feeling a little more reassured now, will wait and see what the next test shows, defo going to cut down on how much creatine and protein Im taking, and drink the right amount of water, hopefully the next test is a little more positive.

Drinking lots of water and flushing through your system may be a good idea.

Good luck!

What does creatinine do and where do you get it from? Is it something that is desirable? It is something I have never heard of before.

Potassium is bad for your kidneys too....so things like Bananas are not good.

Not quite. Your body need near on 5g of potassium a day. 1 banana is about 400mg...

I would imagine your relative is on a controlled diet due to his condition. Bananas are beneficial for the vast majority (ie. those not on such diets).

Have discussed it further with the doc, and the general prognosis is that the 2nd test will tell a lot more, I will also be providing a urine sample alongside the blood test.

One of the first things the doc asked is whether Im on any supplements, and I advised Ive been on 2 - 3 protein shakes and up to 10 grams of creatine a day, and that was immediately highlighted as something that could damage kidneys and produce poor results.

Im off it all from right now, will improve my diet as much as poss, and spend the £60 odd quid a month supplement budget on good food instead.

Also things like Nurofens, I have been on them recently due to various illness/throat pain/ear aches, and apparently that can affect the result as well.

Just got to clean up in a number of areas and hope that it allows my kidneys to clear out and give me a better result in the next test.

So where else can you get the required potassium?
