Hypnotherapy ... Does It Work?
Discussion
I have to give a Best Man speech to 120 guests next weekend. I never have to speak publicly as part of my job and as a result, I'm rather nervous at the prospect! It's been playing on my mind for awhile and I know it'll be at the forefront of my conscious a few days before the big day, let alone during the meal after the ceremony!
I've read a few bits and pieces that attempt to comfort; It's not the end of the world ... It's a small part of the Wedding ... Everyone is routing for you ... However I bet by the time the Father of the Bride and Groom has spoken, my heart will be racing and I'll be sweating.
So I was thinking of having a hypnotherapy session to combat my nervousness on the day. My Mum had similar, again for nerves, before a driving test and she said it really helped. Has anyone else undergone hypnotherapy and did it work for you?
ETA: Excuse poor grammar ... I was in a rush!

Yep. I did the same for my grooms speech. Hoofy on here is the one to talk to.
Did it work for you? Did you feel less nervous when delivering your speech?I know Hoofy; He has a similar watch affliction to myself
Hoofy!
Well, it's one approach. It can work if you are open to the possibility but if you are convinced it's as good as a power plate machine then you're screwed!
Try imagining them naked. Not good if you have a very high sex drive as you'll be remembered as The Best Man With The Erection.
Or try Emotional Freedom Techniques.
Or visualise the scene until you're so used to it that you don't care.

I'm pretty open minded, so I'd like to think it'll work for me ... The way I see it, if it doesn't, I haven't lost anything other than ~£60. If it does work, job jobbed! Hoofy said:

Yeah, I think I'll give that technique a miss! Driller said:

Sorry Darren Knocked the rotten tooth out with a fob watch!
Seriously, though, as above, it can work for many but for others, it does nothing. All you're doing is getting a client into a state of relaxation so they can be programmed with different thoughts. Note that I am not trained in hypnotherapy; I use EFT instead.

I too was terrified over speaking in public but now am much calmer and basically the more you do it...the neasier it gets! Have a plan/structure to the speech. Introduction, middle for jokes/stories and then and end..the serious bit for the the grownups! Dont panic because all of the audience are probably quite grateful they arent doing it!
Speak slowly and dont waffle. I like to do mine with a presentation...powerpoint and slides is excellent as you get hints on what to say next and the photos deflect from your inadequacies. I recently did a big one for my wifes birthday party and did a fake Oscars with prizes for various friends..all had a laugh. You could have the lifetime award to the bride.
Hope this helps!

I've just been on a hypno course, I'm major cynical, but defo for this occasion it would help!
Do it, my friend, you'll be calm, confident, and in control!
Awesome! I've just booked a 90 minute session this Friday ... The speech is on Saturday, so I'll report back as to how it goes and whether I felt the hypnotherapy session did the trick!Do it, my friend, you'll be calm, confident, and in control!
No. Tried it a few years ago as a stop-smoking thing. Smoked 3 fags on the way home.
(Having said that, i later heard that it's important for the person to be relaxed and want to be hypnotised. I was not relaxed and did not want to be hypnotised, as the hypnotist was really fking weird, and i was concerned that i might be secretly bum-fked and never know about it, so i resisted the soothing, calming tones of the weirdy pervert man).

The tutor warned us about people like you, who would "test" the hypnotherapy on the way home. It's not magic, if you want to stop you will, but of course you can still smoke. I suppose it depends who you see, hopefully not one of the comedy ones....
I am the most cynical person on earth and I went along to a watch a group hypnotism to see how fake it would be, it was pretty good but I wasn't convinced then the guy said he would do a group session the following day and all were welcome to come along, I did and I sat in the session and ended up hypnotised, amazing.
Since then I have done a lot of study on the sub-concious mind and psychology as I find it very interesting on how it can improve your life, especially for me as I have suffered from depression in the past.
Its all about the power of suggestion so the more open you are to it the more you will gain, you are already open to it if you go along to the session that is just the start. As it is the power of suggestion and not magic you won't be hypnotised and then told to go on a rampage at the local primary school with a chainsaw, your mind won't allow you do that....
My nan smoked 40 - 60 a day until seeing a hypnotherapist and she stopped straight after, but like I say, it is suggestive so you have to want to stop before you get to the therapy session.
