Chaps,

I need some bro-support here.

SWMBO has found a diet on the Enemy's website (aka mumsnet...).

Basically, the diet aims to lose 14lbs in a week (yeah, yeah, I know, its unhealthy and you'll only put the weight back on etc...) BUT, as we are both in good health anyway, I figured for a week it cant hurt and I will support the Mrs. My personal goal is to lose 10kgs over the next 6 months to get back down to my pre-degree weight. There are over 100pages on MN of success stories of people doing this diet.

Anyway, the diet goes like this:

The basis of this diet is chemical. If you follow the diet to the letter for one week you should lose 14 pounds (and possibly up to 20 pounds)

Day 1 Breakfast 1 slice dry toast and grilled tomatoes
Lunch Fresh fruit (any amount)
Dinner 2 hard boiled eggs, salad, grapefruit

Day 2 Breakfast Grapefruit, 1 boiled egg
Lunch Roast chicken (any amount) & tomatoes
Dinner Grilled steak and salad

Day 3 Breakfast Grapefruit, 1 boiled egg
Lunch 2 boiled eggs and tomatoes
Dinner 2 Grilled lamb chops, celery & cucumber

Day 4 Breakfast 2 slices dry toast, 2 poached eggs
Lunch fresh fruit (any amount)
Dinner 2 hard boiled eggs, salad, grapefruit

Day 5 Breakfast 1 slice dry toast, 2 poached eggs
Lunch 2 poached eggs & tomatoes
Dinner Fresh or tinned fish and salad

Day 6 Breakfast 1 boiled egg, 1 glass grapefruit juice
Lunch Fresh fruit (any amount)
Dinner Roast chicken, cabbage, carrots

Day 7 Breakfast 2 scrambled eggs, grilled tomatoes
Lunch 2 Poached eggs& spinach
Dinner Grilled steak & salad

NOTE

Abstain from anything not mentioned.
Eat only what is shown or do without.
No substitutions allowed.
No eating between meals
No alcohol
No butter milk or fat

Drinks = black tea, black coffee, lemon tea, grapefruit juice, tonic, soda or water only
Salad = lettuce, cucumber, tomatoes and celery only

DO NOT DIET FOR MORE THAN ONE WEEK AT A TIME.

So, I guess its only fair I post my vital stats, like all good PH'ers I am powerfully built...

Height: 6ft 2
Weight: 105 KGS (target: 96kgs)
Activity level: active- swimming, walking, weights (or some variation of) every day.

I've just had the day one breakfast of toast + grilled Toms, it was very tasty and i'm feeling pretty good.

So, what say you? Join me?

ET.

Curious- does it make a diffence if you grill vs cold toms? Or poach vs boil eggs? Or must be exactly as printed?

To be honest, i'm not sure. It says the diet is chemical, so can grilling change the chemical make up of a tomato?!! i'm following it as close to the letter as possible- or as SWMBO prepares it!

As for the eggs, I guess poaching would be fine?

Well, unless you're doing it for a bet, what's the point? Actually, you won't put the weight on... you'll most likely end up heavier after the binge next week.

Hobby dieters on the likes of mumsnet enjoy yoyo dieting where they lose a bit and gain a bit more progressively getting heavier and heavier as they go through middle age into menopause.

There is a difference between eating cooked, or raw tomatoes. I'm pretty sure cooking them releases something. Cant remember what though hehe

That diet looks like a very low intake!

I could cope with all of that.

But dry toast?

Eugh.

Oh and cabbage.

Looks like you're supposed to eat 1000 calories a day. Your metabolism will slow down. Even if you don't binge, because you now have a slower metabolism, your body will store food better once you start eating normally again.

hahaha! I can see your point. As i said i'm doing it to support The Mrs.

I can only speak for myself and SWMBO when I say we have a fairly healthy diet anyway (lots of grilled chicken, veg etc...). And as we are both fairly active, if we lose say 5lbs and put 2 back on, we've still lost 3lbs.

Personally, for me, I just want to see if it works- if it does great, if it doesnt, well, at least i've tried!

Oh, you WILL lose weight. But afterwards, you won't put on 2. You'll put on 7. That's the problem with yoyo dieting encompassing quick fix diets. It plays with metabolism in the completely wrong way.

When your wife is ready to lose weight for good, then she is free to join mfp. smile

I've got a busy morning so hopefully, LG, OC, Halb, matt or one of the others will give more detailed advice on weight loss. Otherwise check out the Transformation thread. Or the other threads on dieting in this section.

Really? I could eat all that in a day! Eat what you want but just get more exercise. Anyway, tell her that if she doesn't like you the way you are, then to go and......yeah, I know....easy from here isn't it??!!

HA! although, really, its nothing to do with how I or she looks as we are both happy with each other, but like everyone else it could always be better.

I had a similar diet for a bet for 2 weeks recently. It was actually a lower calorie count diet than the one above. I lost 1.5 stone, lost the bet of 2 stone in 2 weeks and almost the will to live.

I understand you're doing it for a reason but I really wouldn't bother. I put it all back on (8lb within 3 days of eating a normal amount) quickly.

Once shes tried it and put the weight back on, get her on a proper program and enjoy getting fitter together

You don't mention your height/weight, but from a quick look, it doesn't look like you'll consume more than 800 calories per day.

So, your body will go into starvation mode and reduce your metabolic rate.

It is a stupid crash diet, for fat (ugly) chicks, trying to fit into a skinny dress for some occasion.

14lbs in a week?

To lose a pound you need to deny yourself around 3500cal. In other words, expend 3500 more calories than you're consuming.

http://bit.ly/LZy1MQ

So to lose 14 pounds, in a week, you need to do without 14 * 3500 cals. That's 49000 cals deficit over seven days, or 7000 cals a day.

I hope you're in the Tour De France.

Seriously, and more realistically, lets say you need 2500 calories a day and you make do with 1500 by dieting, putting exercise to one side. That's 1000 short a day. It'd take you 49 days, seven weeks, to lose 14lbs. You could accelerate this with exercise but losing 14lbs in two weeks, even if you ate nothing, unless you're really heavy (and therefore needing a LOT of daily calories to maintain bodywright), would involve some serious exercise.

SSC!
