Rib injury, can i train on it and what have done?!
Discussion
Ok, i'm carrying an injury along my lower right ribs. Very sharp pain under certain circumstances suchas full inhalation, pushing doors firmly shut at 90 degrees and so on, but these are inconsistent.
Basically i think i may have overtrained (3-4 sets of 15-20 reps of fully inverted pushups) and have backed right off, but dont want to stop training altogether on this area so have been doing one set of these and 3-4 sets of 30 floor pushups instead. Pain goes a bit but re-establishes as i train. Sometimes it feels as though the pain is pushed backwards or forwards depending on the exercise.
My questions are, firstly what have i done? It feels like the lower two are separating.
Secondly, do i need to rest completely, or can/should i train?
Thirdly and i suspect this is linked to the previous question, how long will i have this pain? Had it two weeks now and it ebbs and flows. Im guessing if i go to a doctor theyll just tell me it's some sort of pull or strain and to rest it.
Has anyone had anyting similar?

Sounds like you've strained an intercostal, which is the muscle between the ribs. The bottom 7-12 ribs are one point at which the abdominals attach (costal cartilage) so you've basically pulled a stomach muscle. It will hurt during any exercise in which you use your 'core' for stability, which is most of them although some will hurt more than others.Time to heal? If you don't rest it could be up to 8 months.

Balls. That sounds about right. Eight bloody months?!
I did something similar when playing rugby, I initially thought I'd cracked a rib - but it got worse and after a month hadn't changed.
The doc had a poke and suggested a strained intercostal.
I was given acupuncture by a mate (I was mocking him heavily at the time) but it did actually work!
Took 4 months until it was completely gone.

Plenty of other exercises you could be getting along with, just rest it properly for two weeks, take anti-inflammatorys and be careful when you start back to avoid irritating it again.
