You can't smell Legionella pneumphila AFAIK, but then I'm not a microbiologist.
The test for it is not.. " hmmmm, what's that smell? "
Indeed rotting, faecelent, malodourous water is overwhelmingly likely to be due to the enteric flora such as E.Coli, Salmonella enteritidis, pseudomonas spp etc
