Drinking alcohol whilst taking Topiramate - safe or not?

Hi,

Just been prescribed Topiramate (brand name Topamax) and have been told to avoid alcohol. A quick google search also recommends not taking alcohol whilst on this medication. Now, I don't drink everyday, literally I enjoy a good 'knees up'once a week (usually a Saturday) with the lads - something I really enjoy! However, it looks like this has to stop and thats going to kill Me!!!

Just wondering if the reccomendation not to drink is just over cautious as it can be with a lot of medications or should I really not drink?

Anyone on here taking this medication? If so do you still drink? Any doctors on here to advise Me realistically what would happen if I continue to have my once weekly boys night out?

i assume you have been precribed topirmate for seizures of some kind?
alcohol can lower your seizure theshold i.e make seizures more likely, so getting a skinfull is not recommended.
However, in mederation ( 1-2 drinks) should be okay.

Hi,

Yes had a scary episode where I collapsed & had all the symptoms of a mild stroke. Its now been suspected as a Basillar Migraine. Will stick to having a lot less on the weekly outing, if any at all!
