Genuine question- no offence meant, just really curious.

I've not been very well for about 6 weeks - viral thingy plus bronchitis. Due to this I've had to stop exercising and have also been eating a lot more, as for some reason I just felt really hungry.

This has obviously had an effect and the trousers are feeling a bit tight. So its back to gym, running and keeping to my usual diet. It occurs to me that this has always been a trigger: trousers feel a bit tight = time to lose weight.

A week back in and I can already feel the difference.

So a question for people that have put on weight (especially lots of it) why was it when your clothes didn't fit you bought a larger size, then a larger size....instead of thinking "oops better lose some weight"?

As I say just kind of curious as you must have noticed the weight gain, so why let it carry on?

Thanks for any responses.

I put some timber on a few years ago i was happy so it didnt bother me + tbh i didnt realise i was eating that unhealthy at the time. A lot of things that i just presumed were ok to eat had lots of calories etc. It wasnt the fact i was eating loads or eating junk all the time. So i suppose i just crept up on me.

Last year i lost it all again by learning about food eating healthy, working out and not drinking - now i feel a lot better and i enjoy they way i go about things these days. Never ever though id enjoy going to the gym but i love it.

Thanks..very interesting.

You must have had to have bought new clothes though?

Maybe I'm just too tight to go and buy a load of new suits when this happens!

A change in circumstances was a result of my weight gain

As someone who hates the thought of attending a sweaty stinking gym, I was always quite lucky in that my job kept me trim. No matter how much I ate, no matter how much I drank, I remained a constant 12st

I changed jobs 10 years ago to one that was more deskbound and the weight piled on. Before the change in jobs, drinking during the day was a sackable offence, now it is part of my role. The first year I managed to put on 2 stone in 6 months by going to every lunch and event I could get to. After 12 months I realised I needed to detox and went 7 weeks without a drop. I didn’t notice any particular weight loss at that point.

I’m now close to 50, and am currently ‘watching’ what I eat. I’m fed up of the tight trousers and the bloated feel I was getting most days. In the first two weeks I have lost 3 kg. Not masses I know, but for me to remain to any sort of regime, I need to enjoy it, or more importantly not feel like I’m missing out on anything. Only another 15kg to go……

So to answer your question, apart from the sudden burst the rest has gone on really gradually. It’s never really bothered me or stopped me from doing anything (including tying my shoelaces). I’m not a vain person nor do I lack self-esteem or confidence so never felt I needed to do anything about it. There a number of reasons for doing something about it now. I’d like to try and avoid the uncomfortable bloated feel for one, but also it’s to support my partner who is also trying to lose weight. Lastly, I will be a grandfather in a few months time and I don’t want to be the obvious choice for playing Santa at Christmas

The weight goes on slowly usually, so you don't notice the change. It took 5 years of doing no exercise and eating crap for me to get too fat. I stopped drinking at home and having an evening snack, and that was good for about a stone without any extra exercise before I hit a new plateau at just about not overweight according to BMI. Then I got banned from driving, and because I had to walk everywhere the weight did start dropping a bit more. I think I've probably lost about 10kgs in the last year but I have put on a little bit of muscle mass too so I've probably lost a bit more fat than that.

Wow, two stone in six months! Thats going some.

Thanks for your post. You bring up an interesting point re vanity, never really though about it like that. I guess I do like to look good and maybe thats also part of the reason.

Thanks for your response, really interesting to get an insight as I don't know any people to whom I can ask the question.

Good luck with avoiding the santa outfit!

Thanks. You see thats the bit I still don't quite get. Even if weight goes on slowly there must be a trigger earlier on to say 'hmmm I putting on a few pounds here..'. With me its the trousers, feel a bit tighter = time to excercise harder.

I was just walking to work the other day, looking at how people seem to be getting plumper (here in St Albans anyway) and I still don't get it why if you suddenly have to buy the next size up you don't think to do anything about it. It may just be different views on life, mindsets etc..

Thanks again!

For me, I noticed that when I bent over to put on socks, all the fat clumps together... which is disgusting. It's always been when I've seen that, that I've done something (twice in my life, really). I've never been properly fat due to this and if I mentioned I was looking at losing weight in the past, people did give me a "wtf?!" look. On the plus side, it means I've always been able to buy the same size trousers since my early twenties which makes things easy in shops.

Right now, my current goals are purely vanity, although I'm learning a lot about fitness and dieting plus how food really affects your weight (and health), all of which piques my intellectual side (hence pointless posts elsewhere).

Because most people aren't you, your mind works your way. You have a trigger, some people don't. There's nothing to get really, I got fat slowly over a period of 10 years and I didn't bother doing anything about it, if I had a built in trigger then I guess it got covered in fat somewhere and enjoyed it so didn't go off.

You can't make someone lose weight, people always told me I was fat, I knew I was fat, I didn't give a fk. I lost the weight when I was ready to, it wasn't anyone else's choice, it wasn't anyone else's pissy comments, or judgements, it was me.

I had a lot of help and encouragement from the guys here in the body transformation challenge, and I've got to a point where I am happy, I'm still classed by the NHS as overweight, but if I get any smaller I'll look ridiculous.

So, you've got your views, other people have theirs, it's not your life to live, stop worrying baout it, they'll either get the message or they won't, but nothing you say or do will convince them either way.

Blimey, calm down old chap. I was genuinely interested - as I said in first post, it wasn't a criticism of people just a question that I was pondering. Thanks for your answer though, yes we are all different.

In my 20s and 30s I was 13 stone ,now in my 50s @ 16+ stone I find it harder to shift, then that is due to the amount of beer I drink.
So if I stop the demon drink I reckon I'll loose a lot more.
There you have it.

I'm guilty of this, have noticed that I've cut down on a lot of exercise because I haven't been making time for it. Trousers now getting tighter and an old pair of jeans I hadn't worn in a few weeks wouldn't even fit me yesterday.

I'll moan about spending £25 a month at a gym but I'd probably spend much more than that on new clothes...

How does anyone get motivated to exercise? Since moving out I cannot be asked. Get home from work at 5:30, dinner is ready within the hour usually, then just lounge about until bed time.

Right, you see that's my question - not how you gained it or how to lose it - but why you let it get there in the first place. You were at 13 stone for years so why when you started to get heavier did you not think 'hhhmmm getting a bit fat, better sort that out'. Thats what I'm trying to understand.

I was talking earlier about the trigger for me being trousers geting a bit tight in the waist. There must have been a point when you had to go and and buy larger clothes but just accepted that.

Of course I do know people accumulate more fat over the years (I'm nearly 45!)

This is very interesting stuff though, thanks for the response.

You get home at 5.30pm? Well, most people's excuses are that they have no time. Find an exercise you enjoy (sport is included). There will be something. In any case, to avoid putting on the pounds, eat less if you can't be bothered to exercise...

I'm not angry, you just kept saying you didn't understand, and all I wanted to get across was that people don't have the same mindset/triggers as you do. So if you see someone large, they probably realise it, I'm pretty sure they aren't all trying on mediums and wondering wtf they don't fit. They just aren't wired like you are, they may have some other trigger, like I did, or hey may have no trigger at all.

PS and yes I've been hungry for 6 months now frown

Fair enough. I admit I still don't get it, but as you say; we are all wired a bit differently.

This probably sounds silly yes i have new clothes but they are pretty much the same size.

I was Xl t shirt have been for years just filled it out more / or less its only now im in a L. Its not the fit on the belly thats the trouble its getting things to fit my shoulders and be long enough.

Pants and Jeans yes im smaller size now but i have to get a bigger size than fits my waist or jeans wont fit over my thighs even just a normal cut. Bring back boot cuts i was ok then.

Perhaps it is time to look at the kinds of foods you are eating as well as how you are eating. Also, are you drinking enough fluids?

I am overweight, but I enjoy healthy food, I just eat too much of it. I enjoy red wine, I don't like beer. I swapped the red wine for a few months for fizzy water, it made not a jot of difference to my weight.

I'm sure to lose weight you have to be in the right mind set, it doesn't matter how many kind people tell you that you are fat.

AND.......
tight clothes mean that most of them are manufactured overseas so you have to buy a size bigger as they don't reflect the correct size.rolleyes Well that's my theory anyway.
