Morning PHers
I have been suffering from occasional knee pain in my left knee for about a year now, which happens after going for a run. It doesnt always happen but when it does it feels like someone sticking a knife in there. Yesterday I did 8KM on grass (I usually do about 6-8 miles 3 times a week) and both my knees are in agony when I sit down and stand up. I feel like an old man and I'm only 29! I have been running more than usual lately and I did 3 days mountain biking on the weekend, which I don't usually do.
If I go to the doctors I'm afraid of getting medically downgraded at work and I'm worried that I'll have to give up running altogether. The worst case would be getting told I've worn them away or I have artritis. I'm going to try to lay off running for a while but are there any exercises which will help me strengthen my knees? Will I also be ok using a cross trainer or spinning bike or would these also affect my knees?
Thanks in advance, Dai

I did my left knee after running about eight years ago, with similar symptoms to yours. Went to the quack who diagnosed cruciate ligament damage and prescribed rest, a neoprene support, and heat treatment.
Had half a dozen sessions of getting my knee microwaved, strapped it up, rested it properly, and job's a good 'un. I can walk as far as I like across whatever terrain I like, I run 2K a couple of mornings a week, and it's all good (although now everything else hurts because I'm old and unfit, but I worry a lot less about aching muscles than I do about hurty joints)
What I'm saying, I think, is "go to the doctor".
