Developed a stammer

Never in my life have I stammered.

Now just 3 weeks before my 36th birthday I have developed a very pronounced stammer.

Nothing in my life has changed, I'm not under any undue stress, and have no reason for this to start.

What could cause this? And is there anyone I could see about it?

Go and tell your GP, I think.

I know absolutely nothing about stammer, at all, but I do know that a change in your speech without any obvious explanation really needs to be investigated properly.

Any blood relative ever had anything similar?

Get it checked out NOW. You don't get a virus or a bug that makes you stammer. (AFAIK). Something has happened in your brain to effect your speech. A bulging blood vessel pushing on the part of your brain that controls speech perhaps. Could be serious, might be nothing, could be nothing that may become serious if not dealt with today.

Drop what you're doing and get to your nearest A&E.

Thanks guys, I've booked an appointment at the docs for tomorrow.

I wasn't sure if the G.P.s was the right place to go, but it looks like that is where I need to be.

I must agree. I'll also ask, how long have you had it? Did it materialise overnight, or develop slowly?

Most peculiar. There is a chance your doctor may not have answers to hand. Try googling, and a stammer forum or two.

That's outrageous. Go down to A&E now, exagerrate the problem if required and get a scan done today. If it's an annurism or whatever they call it (a bulging blood vessel) and it bursts, it's good night Vienna.

You're being rather alarmist on this thread. If a doctor isn't overly concerned, what do you know that renders his opinion invalid?

No, I'm not a doctor and yes, I'm probably being alarmist. But even so, if it were me I wouldn't be pissing about with my doctor, I'd be down to A&E pronto.

I'd rather be alarmist and look a fool that lying on the floor dying wondering why the hell I was so compliant.

But don't you think that a Doctor with 9 years training and many subsequent years of experience and in possession of far more detailed facts that we aren't privy to,is probably a slightly better judge of the seriousness of the situation than you?
