I came back from a family all inclusive holiday in August at my all time heaviest, so decided to cut back. I also heard that people often think they're hungry when infact they arre thirsty, so I decided to drink more water.

I have iced water instead of tea in the office, about 4 pints from 9-5. Then the same in the eves when the rest of the family are having cheese and crackers or biscuits or crisps. So I'm drinking about 8 pints a day.

The pros so far:
Lost over 2 stone without too much effort.
Am not hungry.
Have always suffered with bad skin, spots, dandruff. made worse by dialy swimming I think, it really dries out your skin. All those skin issues have now gone. Skin has never been so good. Everyone is commenting on how good I look. (just my skin, I'm still ugly.)
Feel great.

The cons so far:
I don't sleep very well, mainly because I'm up 2 or 3 times a night to go to the loo!

But, a few people, when I've told them about my water intake, say it's far too much, and is bad for me.

Is this true. Is 8 pints of water a day too much. What harm could I be doing myself.

I'm 50 and male by the way.

I think in extreme circumstances drinking too much water can cause hyponatraemia. Getting up several tmes in the middle of the night prob isn't great for you either but I'm no doctor.

IANAD, but spread over the day shouldn't do any harm. I don't even think it's particulally excessive, I'm not far off that myself somedays, especially in the summer. Your bladder should get used to the extra, or just don't drink as much in the evening.
Have a read of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intoxication and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyponatremia

Healthy kidneys are able to excrete approximately 1 litre of fluid water (0.26 gallons) per hour
So 8 pints, over a day will be fine, quite a few guys drink more than that much beer in a night.

Where did I say that?

Every evening, after dinner, there is normally some snacking going on with the family. Cheese and crackers or biscuits or crisps or whatever. Maybe a bar of chocolate comes out. Nothing excessive, none of the rest of the family are overweight.

I now pass on these "treats" and stick to iced water.

That's what I thought. I don't drink beer, but I know loads of guys for whom 8 pints in an evening is nothing special. So 8 pints of water over a whole day is surely ok. Some people, when I've told them, have been horrified and convinced it'll kill me!

I'm currently drinking a minimum of 5 litres (6 pints) a day without any issues. Once in a while I need to get up during the night but normally am fine until first thing.

I'm doing a fair bit of cardio and training though so that probably helps sweat a bit out.

The official science says 3-5 litres a day to be properly hydrated.

This figure excludes the extra you would need if you do exercise and sweat.

Everyone is different though so the best way to tell is to look at your urine. If it's not clear and even a bit yellow, you are not hydrated. Drink.

As for the loo-trips: don't drink in the last hour before going to bed, that should sort that issue.

Even having been in lots of hot places around the world, I remain firmly in the 'drink when thirsty' camp so as not to do this:

If you're needing to get up in the night to piss, you're probably drinking too much. Based on what you've said (that the water has replaced snacks and coffee) the health improvement is more likely down to you cutting out the st food and drink more than anything else. Try cutting it down at least to the extent that you aren't pissing all night. wink
