"Mini-stroke" advice

Hi all. I'm after some advice. My FiL appears to have had a mini stroke this afternoon. I didn't see him myself, apparently he was dizzy, confused and not moving well and the paramedics rushed him off to hospital. My wife has just got there and apparently he has just been discharged!
Is that right? Can he really be discharged for this already? I dunno, I thought strokes were more serious? Can he really be ok enough to be out of hospital already?

Sounds pretty standard.

There isn't much they can actually do.

stroke = Blocked blood vessel or haemmorrage > dead bit of brain - more serious.

'mini stroke' (or Transient Ischaemic Attack)= brief interruption of blood supply to a bit of brain > transient symptoms - less serious, but can be a harbinger of stroke and needs treatment e.g. aspirin.

I'd imagine your FiL would've been perscribed something to thin the blood, Warfarin? A TIA is just a warning, as long as he takes it easy and follows a Doctors and Pharmasists advice, he will be fine out of hospital.

a stroke can affect anyone , regardless of age..!

My good pal suffers from these every now and again, he had one a week ago in fact, went in for a battery of tests, result = no driving for a month. He's used to this sort of thing and as long as it's monitored properly there should be no lasting damage.

Hope he is not like me and has problems with the meds apart from asprin

Is he being followed up? A TIA is commonly a precursor to a full stroke, so you'll want to manage risk factors to prevent future events.

This. My FIL also had a TIA. He was discharged immediately as there is very little that can be done after the event. He made a full recovery but foolishly did not take it easy. A full stroke followed some months later following a bout of strenuous physical activity.
