I know many people here are frequent travellers, I'm up there with the best of them. 116 flights this year so far and just about to start my last 2 from Manila via Dubai back home.

In February I went to Hong Kong & Vietnam and whilst in Vietnam had the old "travellers trots". Cleared up after 2-3 days of getting back home so didn't really give it a second thought and was simply careful with what I ate for the rest of the trip (brushing teeth in bottled water etc etc etc) which seemed to help a little.

When I travel through Europe or to the US / Canada I have no problems at all and eat / drink anything and everything.

However I am now on my 4th trip this year to the Philippines, all since I went to Vietnam, and whenever I come to Asia after 5 or 6 days of being here, back comes the old trotski's - normally about 1-2 hours after eating, stomach cramps up and the flood gates open - so to speak.

This trip has been particularly nasty. So am now on a diet of dry crackers and banana's. Dreading the flights home though !

I have an appointment with my Dr on Monday morning, but wondered if anyone else had suffered similarly, what you did to try and control it (rather than simply popping an imodium to "block yourself up") and what the final outcome was - some kind of virus or simply susceptible to these things when traveling ?

A long time ago I got this whilst traveling in the far East and since then I have terrible guts. Pity really as I had an iron constitution before that particular case of the trots.

Good luck.

Unless you have an underlying condition, it's just a matter of learning what not to eat and drink and where to source reliable food and drink. Up your vigilance and hygiene regimes too. Might be worth talking to others on the ground to see how they manage. Good luck!

Not sure if it's coincidence but since I've used doxycycline as an anti malarial I've not suffered with travellers trots etc when visiting out of way places. Worst attack I had was after shrimps in Italy - 'safe nearly home ground' I thought - MUG!

coming down the tunnel" in KFC, god knows how it would be eating on the street though.Sorry can't be of any help but always find it amusing scratchchin

I travel a lot around the world too and don't suffer too many problems.

Usual rules apply. Bottled water for teeth, avoid ice in drinks, anything where local or potentially unclean water is involved like Salad.
Of course, eating lots of spicy food and alcohol helps kill the germs right?

Always have a packet of Immodium available for when it inevitably goes Pete Tong though.

I did a weeks work in Doha last year and the company even brought the catering over from the UK. I suspect that they didn't want any of the crew coming down with the trots.

Didn't stop many of them sneaking off to the Souk for some more local fare though biggrin

We all take care with all the obvious stuff about food, drink etc, what about cash? How many unwashed hands have been on that note your given in change for something? On my last visit to Egypt I was told the taxi drivers keep all the cash in their underpants!!After that I imagined notes like used toilet paper.
