Dental charges?

Could any dentist advise me on the differences between a "scale and polish " and "periodontal treatment"?

I assumed I was having the former done only be told at paying up time that I had had the latter . There seemed no difference to me other than the extra £30 I had to pay

It's been a while since I worked on the NHS but IIRC there was a scale and polish and then there was a "subgingival clean" done in two sessions which took longer and hence cost more.

Certainly won't be exactly the same now but maybe the principle of more work therefore higher cost is applicable?
