I drink every now and then – maybe a couple of bottles of beer in the evening with my dinner or what not but rarely do I go and get sloshed, and last Saturday is exactly the reason why I don’t. I took a short 1 night stay into a European city with some friends as we were invited over. When I had my first beer at 4pm I should have realised that this was not going to end well.

I honestly can’t remember very much after around midnight. Apparently I rolled into the hotel at 5am. When I was rudely awoken at 10am, I was still very much drunk and actually felt in a good mood. My hangover kicked in around 5pm on Sunday evening.

It’s now midday on Tuesday and I still don’t quite feel right. My head feels like it’s in a clamp and I’ve tried drowning myself to death drinking water and eating my way out of it, but no good. I’ve taken b-vit complex, multi-vit complex, coconut water, lucozade and nothing.

I’m hoping I’ll feel better later this afternoon… at one stage on Sunday evening I actually thought I had died Saturday night and this fuzzy stage was my transition between the living world and the dead world.

Alcohol should be made illegal. smile

I think my coconut water replaced that so to speak. I'm guessing it's full of salt, electrolytes and the like?

It's for rehydration when you've had the sts.

Works wonders for hangovers.

When I go through periods of my life when I don't drink much I get bad hangovers, when I drink a lot I don't, don't know why but there is no cure for the hangovers I get they just have to take their course.

I also get awful hangovers. I get to a point in the evening where I have to make a choice, continue drinking and suffer a hangover or stop drinking. Sometimes this means cutting the night short because it's just 'not worth it'.

I feel like death the next day, quite often vomit or feel like vomitting. I like a nice glass/bottle of wine but I've had to cut down a lot now.

Sometimes it's better when I wake up still drunk as I can then try and manage my way through the hangover with plenty of fluids... if I can keep it down

Don’t get me wrong, over Xmas I had a few too many glasses of wine (which I now find I’m allergic to sulphites because whenever I drink red wine, which I love, my nose gets blocked up within 5 minutes) and too many beers and I woke up with a sore head a couple of times, but on a hangover generally I can still haul my backside down the gym and still put a good session in.

However, I have not been this badly drunk maybe ever. Usually I remember everything but I just remember picking myself up out of the snow (was in Poland and it was -14) for the nth time and holding a taxi driver’s hand whom I was pleading with to get me back safely.

How the fking fk I got back to the hotel, found the right room, had my wallet and my phone still on me I will never know. And I didn’t get beaten up.

It must be a maturity thing and my instincts kicking in when consciously I don’t have a fking Scooby doo on what the fks going on.

My girl mate reckons she saw me getting my coat, taking 2 steps outside and going head first into the nearest pile of snow. At least you can rely on your friends to help you… not.

Damn Eastern Europe and your love of vodka. Sickos.

For me, it's a combination of age and lack of practice.

The hangovers I get now after five pints are far worse than the (mild) ones I used to get in my heyday - 10-12 pints and some whisky, just for good measure.

At some point in my early 30s, they also morphed from the standard 'headache and nausea for half a day' hangover into 'headache, nausea and an all-over body ache that lasts for anything up to 48 hours'

The only way to combat it is, I think, to stay 'pub fit'. But as this would come hand in hand with being hugely fat, poorer and having less time for other things, such as time with the family - I'm oot!

I suffer, didn't in my student days but now do. I think it's genetic as my Dad suffers also.

My top tip is Lucozade Lite, drink at least 2 before bed and they work wonders! They have brought me back from a potential monster hangover on a number of occasions, can’t recommend enough.

I suffer badly but don't underestimate the power of a hair of the dog.

I have a theory that proper bad hangover is as much your internal organs being mildly poisoned and that planning a 'glide path' back down to sobriety is the better way.

For example, big session, wake up late, feel terrible. Get some greasy food down you and once composed, a bloody mary or a beer or something to get you mildly intoxicated again. Then self-medicate with controlled doses through to night time and get some proper sleep and wake up smiling. It's sometimes the only way.

For those who suffer bad hangovers, is it really worth it?
As mentioned just above, alcohol is effectively a poisonous drug which would never get the go-ahead if only just 'discovered/invented'.

I've always been ¿fortunate? in that I rarely if ever get a hangover, even when rat-arsed. Pretty sure I'd not bother if I went through what some of you describe though. drunk
On the dryers at the moment anyway. angel

Lucozade Sport. Bottle before bed and bottle beside the bed for the inevitable AM abrupt wakeup complete with cotton mouth and sore head.

And if you can bring yourself to it, exercise. I've no idea if the increased energy use some how metabolises the alcohol faster but it does the trick for me anyway.

You put in a 13 hour shift and you wonder why your feeling st for a couple of days? Lol. There's your problem!

Some people in this thread have real issues.

I'll get off my high horse now before I get a nose bleed.

Yes, Absolutely terrible. But they're completely unpredictable. I can go out and drink 5-6 pints and be 100% the next morning, no issues.

OR I can go out and drink 2-3 pints and this is the result:
Finish drinking about 9pm, home by 10 feeling "sober", drink some fluids, eat some food.
Bed.
Wake up early, 4-5am and Vom.
Feel fine.
Get shivery, then impulsive up-chucking.
Repeat on a 30min-1hour cycle until bile happens.
Normally by 1pm ish I'm devoid of food and fit for some beans on toast. I actually kept a can of beans and some bread in the freezer for this specific purpose. Flat coke is a godsend right now.
Through the afternoon I've very weak, and don't move much. DVD's, computer games and almost continuous low level snacking and tea are the only way to prevent nausea coming on again.
By 5pm I'm normally feeling ok, but tired.

It got to the stage where I would book a days leave if I had a big social to go to so that I could recover, and it was terrible. Note, no usual hangover symptoms: No real headache until the vomiting made me dehydrated, no aching apart from my stomach muscles. I don't even have to be particularly drunk and I've never forgotten any details of the night. It is like food poisoning.

I've done this at my sisters wedding (meant to be driving to skye and ferry the next day, didn't happen, wife fuming) and once with some mates when we did the hartside run in a bunch of fast cars the next day, and I had to get my pal to stop my car repeatedly to let me vom out of the side of it. Apparently he nearly drove me to hospital!

In 2011 I vowed not to have a single "hangover" and managed it, I was bad in 2012 and now for 2013 I've made that vow again. I just have to stop at 3 pints and be really careful. Mixed drinks seems to be a bad idea. IT fks your life up, costs you at work, and makes you look like a lightweight, - I'm not, I can drink alongside most people, only I have a debt to repay the next day.
Wow I thought I had it bad! Glad to say I'm not like that, if I was I'd probably give up!

The days of clubbing nights etc are behind me, I’m now a CAMRA member and get existed when a new Ale is on (and yes I do wonder what happened to me as I’m only 30). Thinking about it now, it was probably the dancing that used to burn off the drink so I was ok the next day.

Now when I go out it’s usually in large groups and rounds / whip so drink at the fasted rate, which is usually a mate on Fosters when I’m on a 5.5% dark ale, then we usually end up in the corner of a pub with music so the GF’s can dance and we can talk about cars / football / stare at other girls.

When I’m back home its usually sitting quietly with sports drink and pints of water until I feel ok to go to bed. If I’m going to be bad then I’ll probably wake up around 7:00 followed my vomiting every 40 mins or so and I usually keep drinking water to give me something to bring back up and not bile.

I usually stop being ill around 11 so then its tablets (no point taking them while being sick) followed by a long shower then some bake beans, they are miracle food! At that point I’m starting to feel ok again and try to use the rest of the day productively.

I’ve never had one last till Monday though luckily but I’m sure it will come with age! Reading that back I do sometimes wonder why I spend £50+ to fill terrible the next day!

I get them pretty bad - can only have a few pints and then feel crap all day the next day. But the award goes to my housemate for ultimate hangover, as he simply doesn't know when to stop.

He'll roll in at around 4 and I'll be up banging around the house before lectures and just poke my head through the door to see if he's coming in - if I'm lucky I'll get one bleary eye look at me and a "no" and thats it. The guy literally devastates himself. He once didn't leave his room for 24 hours. God knows where his bodily fluids were going. He gets a thudding headache, the need to be sick but also this all over ache that just wont go for hours and hours. Really have never seen anything like it.

And he keeps fking doing it!

I get horrible ones, I will usually have to stay in bed till 4/5pm the next day. I will usually throw up in the morning too.

my last bad one I threw up on the Monday after drinking 4 bottles of wine on the Saturday
