Fractured Spine T12 /L1

Anyone Broken there back?
My daughter broke her spine T12/T1 over the weekend sledging!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
had emergency surgery on Tue evening. Pins and rods fitted to stablise the fracture.
Anyone here had similair.
What i am looking for is a long term prognosis.
She is doing amazing. walked to local shop today with support.

I think she is pushing it.

I fractured one of mine (compression fracture) in a fall about 8 years ago.

Was in a plastic cast / corset for two weeks, but after that fine. not all broken backs are a long term drama.

Soubds like she has had great treatment, hope for the best.

I broke my back in April and started a thread about it here a month or so ago. Haven't contributed to it recently though as I've been feeling rather sorry for myself

Sorry to hear about your daughter but it's great news that she's already on her feet. I assume her spinal cord was damaged only minimally/not at all?

I'm no expert but having spent 5 months in a spinal unit last year you see some amazing recoveries - those who get back on their feet soon after the fracture seem to make a full recovery very quickly. As I understand it, it's not the actual fracture which you should worry about, but the spinal cord damage which comes with it in many cases is the thing which keeps us off our feet.

Given your daughter is already out of hospital and on her feet walking I guess her cord was saved which is great

Yes Victor, she was up and walking hours after. She was critical when she arrived. was not allowed to move or eat for three day, as she was an emergency and the operation was to be as soon as they could fit her in. They kept checking her to make sure she wasnt suffering pins and needles etc or numbness, i guess if she had been she would have had her surgery faster. Sorry to hear that you are fed up. I hope that things improve for you.
So amazing is the surgery when it works i guess. and so devastating when things dont go to plan.

Did my T6 (between the shoulder blades) 14 years ago. Lots of pain for about six months (once the horse-strength painkillers were taken away, boohoo). Lots of physio and exercises to sort out the associated realignment of tendons in my back. A little more prone to stiffness/soreness these days, that's all - and that could just be age...

If she had no cord trauma and they've stabilised it properly, she should be fine once it heals. I am not a doctor, though.

Yes Victer. The PH brigade can help.... PH is a lot larger than it was when i first joined, but we are still a community and anything we can all do to help

There are breaks and there are breaks.

Be quite careful reading to much into others people's experiences on this forum. Everyone has good intentions, but you can't generalise prognosis until you classify fractures.

Take a look at this picture; different fracture different outcome.

She got a wedge fracture. I think it looked like B2. If i can work out how to place pics on here i could show you the CT scan etc. It has been stabilised with 4 pins and two rods. The surgeon was going to use more Pins and rods and fuse two veterbrae. But decided that as she is young he didnt want to reduce her mobility. So for now she has the minimum hardware. Longterm this may have to change. But hopefully not.
We also found out she has an extra rib. weird !!!
When i can get the CT scan Pic I will post it.
