Any dentists in the house? Ulcers...
Discussion
I've suffered from mouth ulcers ever since I can remember and have never been able to fnid a cause. I thought it may have been chocolate initially but apparently not as I have the most enormous one on the inside of my cheek, right at the back of my mouth where my jaw meets. I've had it since Saturday.
It's so painful that I have constant ear ache and a dull pain behind my eye and in my jaw. I'm sure it's all linked to the ulcer (1 of 3 of the little bastids I have at the mo) as I believe there is a nerve back there that joins them all together.
I've done a bit more reading today and have come across a lot of people mentioning SLS in toothpaste as a possible cause. Happy to try anything at this point but am looking for the best toothpastes out there without this SLS? Most websites are talking about herbal toothpaste. Rubbing tree bark onto my pearly whites twice a day doesn't appeal massively. Any SLS free toothpastes that actually do the job of a normal toothpaste?
Also, can ulcers become infected as this one on my cheek is raging at the momment. I don't want to waste a quacks time when I should just wait it out like normal but the constant pain is starting to grate.
Thanks.

I tend to get bad mouth ulcers which last for about 10 days. They usually come after I have a small cut in my mouth from my teeth or from sharp food. I don't have a cure, but over the years I have noticed that it's always after a tiny cut in my mouth that I get the ulcer... and sometimes it can take 3-4 days to form
I can't help with the toothpaste but, as someone suffering with ulcers at the moment as a result of orthodontic treatment, I can suggest something the might help ease the suffering. I've just discovered something called 'Iglu' which is a sort of anaesthetic paste. It's not particularly cheap and a bit messy to apply but for me it's the only thing that really makes a difference.
I hope you feel better soon.

Ulcers can be the result of stress and more commonly certain type of food. Some fruits are very acid such as Strawberries, Grapes, Tomatoes and Raspberries. You need to see your dentist and see what he says. In case you have a gum infection or another Oral problem. They often suggest Cordisyl...i think thats how its spelt...toothpaste and mouthwash. In extreme cases you might need to go to hospital. There is usually some underlying reason for Ulcers....you just need to work out the cause. Record what you eat...see if there is a pattern..avoid acid fruits and veg.....as said above plus Cucumber..
I used to get loads and also now get less since switching to a SLS-free toothpaste.
Main source now is my son headbutting me in the face.
I didn't get on with iglu at all - found bonjela complete to be better. The bonjela once stuff was also very effective, however I strongly disagree with their 'slight pain' assessment!

I got to my early 30s before I discovered that it was indeed SLS that gave me mouth ulcers - sometimes I'd have many of them at once - absolutely awful. I used to get them all the time - now it's about once a year as a result of not using SLS toothpaste. Even on the rare occasion I do get one, I've never had more than one at once. No doubt at all it works for me.
I use Sensodyne Pronamel.
