Alright, I've been swimming quite alot recently. I'm a regular runner, and some time cyclist. I've had a good handle on my diet for years now - always been fairly lean.

But now that I'm swimming frequently, well, I'm putting on weight! My shoulders are getting bigger, as is my chest, but there's fat appearing all around me!

I've been running loads too. My diet hasn't changed - in fact I've been really clean most of January. Having a good handle on my weight and diet, I'd really expect to be stick thin by this point. But I'm not - I caught sight if me in a mirror after getting straight out the pool and... Well, I'm looking like a gorilla!

WAT DAFUQ?! Ha.

Any thoughts?

Swimming will use alot of muscles that running doesn't and noticing bigger shoulders and arms would be expected

I have no idea why you would be putting on fat though as swimming would be a better all body workout and should burn more fat than running would

My thoughts too!

It's really happening though. Bigger shoulders are great (t-shirts are starting to feel tight) but there's gain around the waist too. Very strange.

Not too concerned - once Jack Frost fks off ill be out on the bike too. So not expecting to be clinically obese in the near future!

Really bizarre. I hear Michael Phelps eats 14,000 calories a day. Perhaps you need to eat (a lot) more? biggrin

What sort of swimming do you do? Leisurely or as if you're racing the guy in the adjacent lane?

Might be coincidental, but it may be worth getting your Thyroid function tested.

Hahaha! ; )

If they had one of them in the pool, I'd be racing it.

Never one to take it slowly.

I'm stumped as to why you'd be getting fatter unless you're eating more as a reward for the hard work and not telling us. Or your calorie intake estimations are inaccurate.

Haha, yeah this was mentioned quite early in the swim training.

It's kind if frustrating, seeing loads of 'larger ' people in the local pool cruising up and down not getting their hair wet, knowing they'll suffer the same hunger pangs I will... I often wonder if they'll go home and order a pizza because 'they've earned it'?

Well, see how they go in a year's time...

Fing is, you can be fit and fat or slim and unhealthy as well as fat and unhealthy or slim and fit.

I remember being told years ago that your body develops more subcutaneous fat to keep you warm when you start swimming. You need to be racking up many miles to shift it apparently. No idea if true but sounds plausible!

Boggles the mind how anyone can think its anything other than eating a surplus of calories that is making you fat. You are obviously overcompensating for the extra activity. /thread

I read this too, but, and I truly believe the body is capable of amazing things, just can't see it.

Lots of Internet rumblings about swimmers not losing weight when training, though. Strange!!!

Re: diet - nothing has changed, I'm eating less and cleaner than I was late last year, while my weight / composition was totally stable.

Is that the one litre tub of double creamed Greek style yoghurt with a couple (5) tablespoons of honey?

It is true that year round swimmers in cold water, will develop a thin layer of fat around vital organs.

Is this why you never see "ripped" sealions?
