Gympact - get paid to go to the gym?!
Discussion
Not as good as it sounds but is a curious idea.

What it is, is an app where you agree or make a pact that you will go to the gym X times in a week and do some good exercise. If you don't meet your target you agree to be fined an amount. They say $5 - $50 which I am hoping is user defined! or maybe it is random to add extra anxiety. Anyway, if you fail you pay and if you don't fail you are rewarded. You are paid, less than a dollar, from the pot of money collected by the no show's. It employs some economic theory that says people are motivated more by the threat of losing money more than the opportunity to make money. Which I guess is why the fines heavily out weigh the payments. That and I imagine there will be more people who do complete their goals than those who fail.
Interesting idea. Though I can't see it catching on too well. What if everyone is good and goes to the gym? What if, as is likely, people scam their way out of paying fines by being cheeky and cancelling DD's or changing bank details etc.

It would probably work better if you could have closed groups. There's about 10 people in my office who are gym goers - such an app would no doubt create a good amount of banter if you know you're taking money off a colleague.
I'd imagine cheating is quite easy if you go past your gym everyday on the way to work, which many of us do in city centre locations - on my walk from car park to office I go past at least 3 gyms.
