While not really illness in the true sense of the word, I have found over the past 6 months I seem to be picking up every effin cold, flu, sore throat etc etc going. I eat pretty well, lots of fruit, veg, minimal alcohol, lots of water, I have done a couple of 10Ks last year and have been training since December on beating my times from last year. So I run 2-3 times a week and get out on the bike as and when.
I am a few ( meaning 5lbs) heavier than I need to be (11st 8) and can shift that.
What I am more concerned with is the constant illness. I work full-time, and am studying for a degree, which at the present is really becoming a grind, juggling family life as well. Obviously the illness is taking its toll on my training properly. On occasions I do continue to get out on the road, but end up feelimg much worse after.
Is there anything I need to consider? Multivitamins etc?
All advice gratefully received.

Do you get enough rest? Classic sign of over training.

I dont feel like overtraining is the issue sadly lol.
Prob 6 hours sleep a night, tend not to run on consecutive days.

Nobody who is over trained ever does!

Although in your case other aspects of life are probably taking their toll. Slow down, do less, take a de-load/rest week, let your central nervous system recover. CNS fatigue = lowered immune response.

thanks for the responses Pilchard. Just frustrating at the moment. I have always been reasonably illness-free.

Sounds to me your immune system is low. I suggest you go see your GP ..explain whats been going on and get some blood tests done just to be on the safe side.

I am exactly as you sound. I'm on my 4th lot of cold since October. None lasting shorter than 3 weeks. And I mean really evil colds, headache/lethargy/sore throat, 2 lots lasting 5 weeks, one after another.
It sounds like I train to a similar amount as you cardio wise and like you eat well.

I have spoken to my GP and loads of other health professionals (not hypochondriachly), I have been told that there is basically a few more severe/aggressive/persistent viruses/colds going around this year. You are just like me unfortunate enough to be getting them.

Whether this is true or bullst, I don't know but it's unlikely you are seriously ill.

It's driving me insane, I've got my first duathalon in a month and havnt run in a forthright :/.

yep pretty much this lol.
I have not been out since Sunday, toyed with going out last night but it was almost freezing and I want shot of this bloody cough.
I think a trip to the doctors might be in order

Ask for a blood test and check catecholamine (hormone) levels. Raised/lowered epinephrine as a result of adrenal fatigue causes many of the symptoms mentioned in this thread. Adrenal fatigue is caused by overexposure to stress, or in this case overtraining. It's far more common than people imagine. Sometimes it goes fairly quickly, sometimes it can take a considerable time (years).
