Pistols are more about flexibility and balance, assuming you're not pulling with the hand when you hold onto something but just using it to stop yourself falling over.
Edit: do it with your supporting leg on a chair and your other leg dangling. If you can get your arse off the ankle then you're strong enough. I've seen people use a counterweight (hold a light dumbbell in front of you). We do a similar thing in climbing - the rock over which involves getting your foot high, your hips over then pushing upwards with your leg.

/\/\ Also pistols are a brilliant exercise when you consider the returns - hip strength, hamstring strength and lower back flexibility - for only an initial bit of effort. If you're over 40 and want enhanced later life hip mobility...Think of the extra support all those new hip muscles you've developed will give the joints...
