Okay, horse meat scandal aside… all the chemicals they put into ready meals and fast foods… are they safe? GM crops are becoming more and more common and there have been publicised results on things like rats developing tumours from being fed GM feed. Have you seen some of the lists of chemicals in things like burgers from fast food places?

Fortunately I do try to limit my consumption of convenience foods and when I do want convenience I try to have something pretty naturally like natural peanut butter on granary or something.

It is a little worrying when you see the ingredients lists for some pretty ‘ordinary’ foods.

Problem is, they put horse into mince meat. You eat natural peanut butter and have read the ingredients. So what? They didn't put "Horse" as an ingredient in any of the products pulled from shelves. Does that vegetarian dish taste "just like chicken"? Really? Why might that vegetarian dish taste "just like chicken"? wink

And as for jam. I reckon there's bits of toddler in there to make it bright red.

The ONLY way is to grow your own. But then you need to check the ground and fertiliser you use.

I say just eat it and enjoy it. What do you want to live to 90 for? To enjoy being washed by some foreigner who can't get a better job and despises you?

Yes. People being poisoned by approved food additives is very rare in Europe. I think there are bigger things to worry about, such as what might be in your food that you don't know about.

I'm not too worried about GM stuff from a human health point of view - a generically engineered crop is still basically the same crop. The larger worry is about what it does to the ecosystem, and the way certain companies control the supply of GM seeds to farmers.

Have you seen some of the chemicals naturally occurring in foods? Most of what people think are synthetic chemicals are actually derived from food sources anyway, and additives are strictly controlled (assuming they're legally added).

I limit my consumption of convenience foods because they're somewhat bland and tend to be rammed full of sugar and salt, not because of the additives they may or may not have.

I do not trust any large food manufacturer. They are interested in profit not our health and nutrition. I try to minimise my consumption of artificial sweeteners and preservatives, I hope by doing so I won't become 1 of the 3.

Went to a vegan restaurant this week, one of the nicest meals I have had for a long time.
If you look, there are alternatives out there to the processed stuff that supermarkets serve up.
No as easy as it could be though. biggrin

Life is a fatal sexually transmitted disease and Cancer is one of the failure methods that occurs when everything else doesn't get you.

Im amazed that the impetus of the meat 'scandal' is that some horse entered our food chain but little has been made of our food being slaughtered in Romania then passing through several processing plants in different countries before becoming a lovely ready meal

I'm not worried about GM crops at all, it's what farmers have been doing with hundreds of years of breeding out weakness in a crop, GM, just allows you to do it without waiting for a genetic mutation.

I'd love to see this study about GM causing tumours in rats.

I think the fact that people aren't collapsing dead on every street corner says that yes, it is safe to eat.

Safety isn't really the issue though, but the obfuscation.

For example, I learnt this week that many popular flavours of crisps (including salt and vinegar) have lactose in the flavourings. Not really sure why.

Because stuffing sugar in stuff helps people binge eat.
I wonder if chippies drop a few Tate and lyles in their fryers? biggrin

I look at all ingredients now, just for fun, and was not surprised to see sugar as an ingredient in crisp packets a few weeks ago. Not after reading/watching the stuff I do.

Sugar tastes nice so they put it in many foods to improve flavour.
