Chaps.

Been a runner and bootcamper for about 2 years now, recently fked my knee so can't run on it at the moment and probably won't be able to for say the next year. What can I do to keep fit whilst it heals and/or gets operated on?

Cheers, TX.

Swimming is joint-friendly, but my god it bores me rigid. Happy to spend hours in the sea on holiday, snorkeling over a nice reef, but lengths in the pool are mind-numbing. You can't even take your MP3 player to take your mind off it.

Cycling isn't as bad for your knees as running, but you can still suffer and if your bike isn't set up correctly you will definitely have trouble.

Get a handbike or go to a gym with one. They can be really tough.

Failing that, upperbody compound workouts from a sitting position with light weight and a very high reps range (80+).

Having been in a similar position recently due to a stress fracture of my hip (caused by running) leading to an an enforced lay-off from running (getting back into it now thankfully), I found a new addiction in indoor rowing (if your knee allows it) - a great all-over workout and one where you can also push yourself.
