Not sure what is calorie-dense and what is safe to eat?

Slightly not answering your question but I would advise that you consider the 5:2 mentality.
Eat normally 5 days a week and consume 5-600 calories on the fast days.
With a bit of exercise your wife should see steady weight loss.

I hate diets like that and see it just as another fad diet, yes it might work but its not a permanent solution. A good diet should be something you can do everyday for the rest of your life and be happy.

Mrs Pints uses that and recommends it too.

Helps her track calories burned and consumed. Can't really lose much weight though - only a size 8 (no pictures will be forthcoming). biggrin

Agreed. It's not like you have to do anything. Just don't eat on two days out of 5! biggrin

If you can find an intermittent fasting routine that works for you, it's exactly the opposite of a fad diet. I've been doing one particular variety for about a year now - i've been between 7% and 10% body fat the entire time, I eat pretty healthy most of the time, but also get blind drunk, binge on curry and crisps and cake and stuff my face until i feel sick ... offset by periods of fasting - which are now so engrained in my daily life it requires no effort or thought whatsoever. I can't see myself ever changing.

The intermittent fasting that I've looked at that does seem to be more of a long term strategy would be you consume your normal daily calories I.e. 2500 in the space of 4-6 hours and then spend 18-20 hours fasting.

Indeed - I have done 12/12 for a few months.

Intermittent fasting certainly is a long term solution IMO, especially for the fatties

once you get down to a weight you are happy with, just eat clean.

I hate the people who think that they can just "eat whatever they want" on the 5 days you dont fast though

That is a long fast really. I usually have an 7-9 hour troughing window/15-17 hour fast

of course you can't exactly eat "whatever you want" in the eating window but it doesnt feel like a diet either - you can eat and drink until you are fully and properly sated/stuffed at meal times, and then have dessert, and then a cheese course, so it does kind of feel like that sometimes
