Second hand smoke.

Good afternoon chaps.
A little insight - My mother is retired, and after my father passed away she has doubled the number of fags she smokes (circa 60 a day full strength cigs). I have approached her regarding her habit, and she point blankly refuses to open any windows, doors or smoke outside in the winter months. It is a very touchy subject, and whenever I bring it up I get the cold shoulder.
Problem is, I have now moved back to my mums house to help her pay the mortgage, and the smoke is unbearable. All my clothes stink, people have commented on the smell of smoke on me, and i've even noticed my labrador is struggling for breath when taking him out for walks. I try my best to stay in my room with the door closed, but still can't keep the smell/smoke away.
Apart from the obvious- moving out, is there anything else I can do? I've bought her expensive electric cigs, which she doesn't like. Bought air fresheners, I've looked into air filters, but I know how she'll react if I bring in an air purifyer.

I wouldn't even help my mother pay the mortgage if she was burning £600 a month for no reason. She is an adult and should behave like one, not just expect her son to prop up her habits. That's coming from a smoker too!
While I understand you making your point about being a smoker, it really isn't relevant.If someone struggles to make bills, the best thing to do is find out where money can be saved, Sky TV, broadband, 60 fags a day
. I've heard of people smoking 2 packs a day, but 3?! Assuming its 5 minutes a fag, that's 5 hours a day just smoking.If I was helping pay a mortgage, I'd hope the person I was helping would be reasonable in what they spend their money on.

I was on 60 a day back in 2003 although to be fair I was in Iraq and that may not of helped. Oh and they were much cheaper.

kadoodledoo. I hate to say this but I'm not sure it's going to be an issue in the medium to long term...There is every possibility she may sell up and move to a smaller property, but not anytime soon. She only has two years and the house is paid off, and her mortgage is minimal payments. I’ve moved back in not only to help out a little, but to keep her company too. I am a young guy myself, so I am enjoying being back at my mums. The ciggies is the only stalling block though.
I know she spends a lot on cigarettes, but pays less as I know someone who travels back and forth to the continent on a regular basis. It works out at roughly £250 a month.
Has anyone tried a HEP vaporizer? I’ve read mixed reviews online.
Anyone know what is the best e-cigs for a heavy smoker?

There is a really long thread on E-Cigs in the Lounge here on PH, a few PH'ers have moved to e-cigs with great success, yself being one of them. Following on from my conversion another 6 friends / colleagues have also moved over to e-cigs.However - if she isn't open to trying them then I doubt she'll be massively receptive to them. I guess to some extent anyone who converts "wants" to convert.
You mentioned that one of your friends gets cigarettes from abroad, what if this supply were to dry up a little and introduce UK pricingof cigarettes into the equation. I know for a fact I used to smoke slighlty more per day if I had "stocks" in the house following a trip abroad.
It's very easy for some on this topic to say move out, they don't understand fully, none of us do, but I CAN understand that you sound like a very careing concerned fella. Concerned that your mum has a few problems, she is alone, she is missing her husband and increasing her ciggy habit sounds like self flagellation. Thank goodness you are there for her, a bit of mutual support as you no doubt miss your dad too. It will be difficult, nothing is ever easy, but it is early days and you will have to re-build her confidence in living, but not forgetting your confidence either. When she adjust to living her own life as it is now, she will with your guidance and gentle prompting realise she is overdoing the fags. In the mean time, if your friends are true friends, explain the situation to them, and fabrese and hanging your clothes outside before you go out. You sound like a kind son, be patient.

If you were helping someone pay their mortgage would you be happy for them to be throwing £250 a month away on fags?I'm all for helping people, but if they don't help themselves...
