I went out Friday and Saturday this weekend. Had a fantastic weekend with some new friends and beautiful young lady with whom I hit it off.

Anyway, although I didn't over excessively drink - yesterday and today I have been feeling extremely depressed and anxious to the point where I am focusing on all the negatives in my life and seem to be mentally blowing everything out of proportion. I am usually a happy guy and I am not used to feeling like this at all.

I think being in the office today is going to be a struggle!

Anyone else ever had a "mental hangover" like this before? If so any ideas on how to shake it off? As I'm now 32 is this is sign of things to come with getting older?

Thanks!!

Luke.

It happens every now and then. Wouldn't worry too much. And don't forget alcohol is a massive depressant.

Is this not known as 'the fear'? There was a recent thread about it.

Well I'm still in "The Fear" since Friday night... seems to be lifting ever so slightly.

Reminds me why I dont get smashed anymore... I feel like something from fear and loathing in Vegas!

This is the first time I have ever felt like it.

Anyone know of any remedies? I'm thinking about the gym to get the endorphins going but I really don't think I can drag myself there.

After this I am seriously considering going tee total. I never want to feel like this again!!

Get up and get out, work on one of your projects, basically do something productive.

Actually its quite a mild depressant, and in any case its a central nervous system depressant, not an emotional depressant. Itt depresses or slows body functions...your blood pressure goes down, your blood vessals dilate, your reaction time increases.

I get this everytime I over do it...seems to be a very fine line between a normal hangover or an episode of the fear!

As a result I try to keep count on the ammount of drinks I have, unfortunately in the wrong surroundings it can easily get out of hand. This usually consists of the "Shaking Stevens", "The Fear" and inability to think straight. Usually gone in 3-4 days!

I always say "Never Again!"

I read that booze obliterates your testosterone levels, and low testosterone causes feelings of anxiety etc.

Whether true, or enough of an effect to actually cause these feelings (more so than the fact that you've been ankle deep in what's effectively a poison) I couldn't say.

But it's nice to have a vaguely scientific explanation to rationalise why you're feeling like ste!

I have always had this with severe hangovers. Just stay away from sharp objects and the medicine cabinet for 24 hours and all will be well.

Until the next time....

I created a similar thread a while back.

Funnily enough I’ve been on a mad one myself… Thursday we got pretty drunk, Friday we got wrecked (got home 5.30am) and Saturday I had a party to go to and got pretty merry (into bed at 5am)… woke up Sunday morning (just!) and I felt awful… thinking oh no… but I had a cup of tea, breakfast and honestly felt fine. Just tired for the day. This is unusual for me as I would still be utterly dead to the world right now, wanting to hang myself. I have reasoning as to why I didn’t suffer too badly the last few days.

1) I definitely didn’t drink as much as I *normally* would on a single night out. I think a lot of people (mainly us guys who think we’re invincible) have a big ‘blow out’ night and will drink way more than we realise. Those hazy tequila shots at 2am, mixing whiskey, vodka, beer, wine etc. My drinking the last few days has been steady even if I did have a lot of shots.
2) On my big night, Friday, at one point (about 11.30pm – I was wasted) – I drank 3 glasses of water. Good tactic considering my state at the time.
3) I only drank good quality lager. I swear, beer/lager is the devil. Go read up on how beer should be served and drank. There’s a reason why the Dutch put a huge head on their Heineken. There’s a reason why they serve beer in smaller glasses. It’s to do with the beer remaining at a certain temperature (smaller glass, drank faster, rather than a pint which will sit there, lose its head and get warm). A lot of people think beer oxidisation (no head enables the beer to oxidise) and getting too warm is why you get headaches and can be sick… I am sceptical but it worked for me. Plus it tastes a lot nicer. So the next time you’re in a foreign country and you order a reputable draught lager and are given a huge head on it… don’t moan, in fact, the opposite, thank the barman for knowing his st.
4) The stuff we imported I swear is the rejected alcohol. A few people have told me they think this as well. You go on holiday, you drink copious amounts of alcohol and feel fine. However, that could be because you’re in a better mood generally, weather is generally better and you have sod all to do – not like you gotta get up to put some washing on, tidy the kitchen and sweep up outside… in the cold! I do think there is something in this though, with the additives in our alcohol?
5) I felt tired from my Friday night and had this party to go to… I drank a couple of spirits to get me feeling in the mood but on the way up when people were drinking wine and beer, I had a can of Monster energy drink that I sipped steadily on the way up. When I was drinking that night, it was mainly good quality vodka and cranberry juice. Again, had some shots and a couple of cocktails.

Today I feel fine… as I say, I’m tired but I don’t feel any effects from alcohol, my anxiety is fine (I’m an anxious person anyway) and I don’t feel depressed.

So, that’s my reasons above. Another thing to note is your mental attitude. If you think positively, it can help. I’m not saying it is the answer, just something to help contributing to feeling better. I know thinking positively and feeling good may be a bit of a chicken and egg scenario, so I don’t personally consider it a main factor.

At the end of the day, some of us just really do suffer more than others. I am not sure whether it’s a mental or physical thing (possibly both) but if you are like me, quite an anxious person who is prone to bouts of depression then you will have more problems than someone who doesn’t.

We all love a big blow out night, but just remember, you can easily have as much fun, get pissed and not feel as bad the next day as long as you know and listen to your body. I have definitely learnt a few things myself over the last few days and know that I can drink a lot and still feel okay the next day as long as I follow my own rules.

I think there's something in this. I go away with a group of mates to a house in France most years and we get through prodigious quantities of cheap domestic Kronenbourg - but it never seems to give me much of a hangover. Could this be because it comes in little glass stubbies which remain cold from the fridge throughout their (short) lifespans, perhaps?

I always thought it was down to the preservatives in the beer as much as anything.

Also, holiday hangovers are different.

I suffer quite the same on occasions. It isnt until I've been for a run, gym or football that I start to see the brighter side of life again.

Try exercise!

Beer shouldn't contain preservatives - they are or should be all natural.

However, it wouldn't surprise me if the generic, tasteless stuff like Fosters do...

I've never got these - maybe hang out with your mates the day after, as a mutual hangover can be quite funny.
