I over think everything.

Everything I do, I think of every possible outcome and end up worrying myself sick about all the possible 'bad' outcomes.

Is is normal? Any 'cure'? Or am I mental?

Thanks for any help.

It's called catastrophizing, a cognitive distortion and one of many.

The distortion classification tells you it's not "normal" (whatever that means), but it's also far from uncommon as lots of people do it.

Search Google for catastrophizing. There's a lot of info out there and lots of suggestions to help overcome it and how to not let it cause you trouble.

Guilty as charged! My wife goes nuts at me as I over think everything, I am a pessimist which doesn't help either.

Mate, I rode the M25 into work this morning on my bike and you wouldn't believe how many negative thoughts I had for the first half of the journey such as, "better keep my speed down, what if I have a blow out or a huge gust of wind throws me into the central reservation?".

I often think negative thoughts but generally when it's something that does have a high risk of going tits up anyway.

It's a form of anxiety that triggers your adrenal glands. Have a look into being prescribed beta blockers to stop the anxious feelings and hopefully it will help your state of mind.

Mind over matter.

I am the same.

It sounds stupid but I always try to remember this phrase "Today is the Tomorrow you worried about Yesterday". Which re-enforces that most of the things you worry about never happen.

Sometimes I get these feelings halfway up a climb.

"Did I tie the rope properly?"
"What's that creaking noise in my harness?"
"My harness is getting a bit old."
"What if the wall wasn't properly built?"

nuts

Just have to control your thoughts.

Ah, risk assessment. My favourite.

Try a scoring system.

Severity of worst outcome 1-10 where 10 is death, and 1 is nobody else will notice.
Likely hood of worst outcome 1-10 where 10 is it's 100% likely, and 1 is 0% likely
Warning 1-10 where 10 is there is no warning, that it's going to happen, and 1 is that the warning is so obvious that you can prevent it.

Multiple the 3 numbers together. If the score is above 100, say what you can do to change the numbers.

For instance. I'm planning on buying a car, I've actually paid a deposit to a dealer, and he's got a list of things to sort. what if the car breaks after the warranty period?

Potential Outcomes, gearbox, or steering pump failure.

Gearbox, is going to cost £500 for a recon box, call that a 6 * moderate likely hood say 5 * warning is unlikely that a hearing a bad noise will prevent it happening * 10, so that's a score of 300. Bad. Mitigation. If I change the Gearbox oil, it might reduce the 5 to a 3, But not much I can do to reduce the score from 180. Just have to live with that.

Power Steering scores 5*5*6, so 150, but having looked I can get a recon pump for a lot less, so It's now 4*4*6 = 96

I'm basically saying if you try and score your fears, and prioritise the high scores, and develop a plan B. then you might find most things are not worth worrying about.

And plan B, is "do nothing" sometimes.
