Hi

I've had back problems for a number of years and have decided to see someone about it but I have no clue if chiropractor or osteopath is right for me? what is the difference?

thanks

Bit simplistic.

I have had good results with both. However. osteo's are better with posture and muscle pains. Chiro for bone, joint issues.

But in my experience it is more about the person you meet.

I think it's the other way around, on a training and regulation front...

Correctly:

chiropractor = quack
osteopath = quack
orthopaedic surgeon = back doctor

Neither chiropractic nor osteopathy are well rooted in actual medicine.

I think you really need to do your research and see what training they actually do!

Training and regulation has nothing to do with something working. There is quite a lot of training in chakras, but it's still crap.

I've had experience of both and only one seemed to have any real medical understanding.

And if it were me, I'd book an appointment with my GP...and I'd sit there and refuse to leave until I'd had an agreement to get x-rays done free on the NHS before visiting either

Um, I (foolishly) paid a lot of money every few weeks to watch some bloke hold my baby daughters head so he could align the plates in her skull. Research done.

Chiropractic is based on "innate intelligence" and similar made up bunk. The AMA said, "It is the position of the medical profession that chiropractic is an unscientific cult whose practitioners lack the necessary training and background to diagnose and treat human disease." Which is pretty clear cut really! People have died from chiropractic spinal manipulations that severed arteries.

Osteopathy is actually very similar, despite osteopaths and chiropractors not really getting along.

I'd rather trust an actual doctor than some mystic healer, thanks.

The fact you use the term "complimentary medicine" says it all.

"You know what they call complimentary medicine that's proven to work? Medicine." Tim Minchin.

Might I add that it's highly ironic that you're using badscience.net to criticize osteopathy while being a chiropractic supporter given Ben Goldacre (the author of badscience.net) is highly critical of chiropractic...
