dilemma with dentist re wisdom tooth removal
Discussion
Went for my regular check up on Thursday, going back week after next to get a cracked filling repaired, BUT. He showed me these x-rays he took of my wisdom tooth which points toward the front of my mouth touching the tooth next to it, not giving me any issues, I know it's difficult to clean with floss, so I'm extra conscious of it when brushing, he's asked me to think about getting it pulled out, which means hospital dentist. I need to decide before I go back, anyone had one out even though it's not giving any issues? It's NHS, does my dentist benefit by referring me?
Just asked the wife, dental nurse, says the dentist won't benefit from referring you. They refer when sideways as the surgery won't have the correct equipment to remove it. Because its pushing the tooth in front it's difficult to clean and you could get below the gum line decay in the pushed tooth.
My dentist showed my my xrays a couple of years ago with my teeth doing the same thing as yours, he said he'll leave them alone unless they start causing me problems. From what I remember from reading up about it at the time current thinking is moving away from 'preventative' removal towards removing the wisdom teeth only once they begin to cause an issue.
I had mine out in a Dental Hospital. My dentist had a go at taking it out but i could feel it so they gave up after a few attempts and got me into the Hospital.
I was bricking it when i went after hearing people saying having it out is real painfull + my normal detist trying and failing.
They injected me asked if i was numb etc i thought he was just tapping about to check if i was numb next thing i no he tells me im done and to rince out. Didnt feel a thing honestly didnt even no he'd done it. By far THE best experience at a dentist ever.
It does hurt a bit later in the day but nothing a few pain killers didnt sort out.

I had all four of mine done 15 years ago under general anaesthetic in Airdale Hospital. I even stayed overnight.
I was told that they had to remove part of my bone to get them out.
Pain lasted 2 weeks, and I almost became addicted to painkillers.
But hey none of the infections and pain I used to get.

I had the exact same situation with my wisdom teeth. Came through point forwards. The dentist just took an xray every 6 months to keep and eye on it as it was touching my back tooth.
Last x-ray showed I was getting a dark spot on my left tooth so he said it was best to have it out before it started to get any worse.
Quick referral to a dentist that had the equipment to do the op. Few cuts, bit of drilling and pulling and Roberts your father brother it was out with no worries with a few stitches in place.
My right tooth is fine so he said there is no point taking it out. Hes just going to keep and eye on that the same as my left

Yeah, those dark bits on the adjoining tooth on the x-ray is what he was on about, it's on the lower jaw, after a quick google search these are easier than the upper ones, was there a big void where the root was, what happens to that?Last x-ray showed I was getting a dark spot on my left tooth so he said it was best to have it out before it started to get any worse.

Be careful.
I have lower partially erupted wisdom teeth which my dentist suggested I should have removed. He referred me to a maxillofacial surgeon who had me x-rayed and immediately told me to avoid surgery until and unless my teeth become more problematic. This was 15 years ago and although they remain partially erupted, meaning they can trap food and thus become susceptible to infection, I've actually had no real problems.
The big and rather important reason the surgeon was so quick to advise against surgery was that upon viewing my x-ray, he observed how close my mandibular nerve ran to where he would need to cut to remove my teeth. Everyone is different and this may not be a consideration for you but when a respected consultant told me he'd rather not operate, I appreciated his conservative approach.
Just some food for thought...
