There is something small and dark under the skin of the pad on my thumb. There is no entry mark and I don't remember anything penetrating it.

If I rub my finger over the area there is a distinct bump and it feels hard under the skin - it also hurts if I push to hard.

It's not agony, rather uncomfortable and being right where I use the thump to pick stuff up or do anything with my hands, it is being bashed regularly.

Any ideas?!

Surely it'll just be a tiddly splinter? Soak thumb in warm water for a bit to soften skin and then have a dig with a needle. It'll likely work its own way out eventually but that's nowhere near as satisfying as a bit of DIY minor surgery...

This, soak hand, needle, remove.

The upside is not only will you have removed it, but you can also tell people you have performed surgery on yourself. thumbup

This! it also helps to get it all dirty/oily, then find a rusty old stanley blade to do the digging

Is it wrong that I actually envy you at the moment? Picking at things is so satisfying. It must be my inner primate.

I once got a needle stuck under my kneecap. That felt quite odd.

Odd you should say that. What the OP describes sounds like the start of what I had in a finger, which was essentially a verruca, for a finger. Kind of a warty thing with black chunks that would come out on occasion. Started off because I got a bunch of "flashings" off a screw in my finger.

Or. It could be a splinter.
