Leading on from this thread: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

That thread can be summarised as: I want to become leaner, criticise my diet and exercise regimes.

Based on advice received in that thread I immediately cut out more fat and all processed meats from my diet and stayed off most carbs. Carbs were mainly salad and green veg. Meat was trimmed steak once per day, chicken once per day, 2-egg omelette for breakfast. Modest meal sizes.

I found that I was hungry and lethargic much of the time, but my strength increased very quickly. Noticeable muscle gain, fat going slowly, skin tone much improved. BUT due to the hunger and lethargy I felt it was more of a diet than a lifestyle.

So a week or so ago I went back to a high fat, low carb diet. I have always found eating like this fairly easy because although its boring I don't get hungry. I also find it good for extended cardio work; energy levels remain high. But I have found that when lifting heavy weights it's not so effective and I run out of steam. Skin tone worse too.

My body weight has stayed almost constant at 14 stone regardless of how I am eating (no, the scales aren't jammed!). I am gaining muscle mass, so obviously I am gaining muscle at exactly the same rate as I am losing fat. But given that I am presumably putting on muscle fairly slowly, I am also losing fat quite slowly and would like to do it more swiftly.

I have tried doing HIIT instead of long, steady cardio sessions. It has saved a lot of time, but I remain unsure about other benefits. Intuitively I believe that if I go out running / cycling instead my body will find ways of not needing to heft so much fat about and offload it. Simplistic perhaps.

The goal remains to lower body fat whilst gaining muscle. I don't want to gain or lose size, just become leaner more quickly than I am achieving at present. I am thinking about re-introducing more complex carbs, but that way of eating is alien to me. Can anyone offer any meal suggestions please?

Thanks as ever for any pointers.
