I've used Sci-mx for quite some time due to a good deal I was getting, but this has come to an end. Happy to buy it again but has anyone got experience with any other products for less money? Myprotein etc?

There's so many products out there it would be nice to hear some reviews.

Thanks

MP products are of a very good quality in my opinion but I've no experience with their bulking powders.

However, couldn't you make your own? Whey protein blended with some peanut butter, honey, full fat milk, cheap ice cream?

God I'm hungry.

IMO you don't need bulking supplements.

The only real key is fast high quality protein for you golden hour (your golden 2 1/2 hours actually) - Whey. This needs to be manufactured as you can't make it yourself. To turn pure Whey into a bulking supplement you just need to add carbs. Bulking supplements usually just add Maltodextrins, but you don't need just those. A nice mix of starchy and sugary carbs are ideal. You can get these anywhere.

Liquidize in a couple of Bananas into your Whey. Done.

Excellent thanks.

The last thing I'd want to do after the gym is try and mix that up lot I'm afraid! Plus peanut butter is utterly vile laugh It's a lazier option but I think I'd rather have life simple.

Interesting points.

I find I do well with bulking supplements, a do a lot of training, which combined with a fairly quick metabolism, means anything I can get into me helps. I'd rather have a powder I can just add water too as and when smile

Wasn't this discussed the other day - the 'golden hour' as you put it is pure bro science?

Didn't I see plenty claim it makes a difference but there are no studies to back it up. Obviously it'll do no harm, but it's nothing to get concerned about.

I read a recent and pretty conclusive study that found, [if catabolism is minimise by eating before workout/post workout] anabolism is at maximum about 2 1/2, but over the next 48-72 hours it slowly tails off to normal levels.

Trying to find it again with google's assistance...

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19478342

Results indicate that the time of protein-supplement ingestion in resistance-trained athletes during a 10-wk training program does not provide any added benefit to strength, power, or body-composition changes.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8563679

It is concluded that following a bout of heavy resistance training, MPS increases rapidly, is more than double at 24 hrs, and thereafter declines rapidly so that at 36 hrs it has almost returned to baseline.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21289204

Our results suggest that resistance exercise performed until failure confers a sensitizing effect on human skeletal muscle for at least 24 h that is specific to the myofibrillar protein fraction.

I'd be interested to see if there are any other studies into this though!

^ All way too old, especially one going all the way back to 1995!

This was a study that was concluded early this year and the largest of it's kind IIRC. Can't remember where I found a link. It was quite underground though and I may have got it from some of the sports scientists I'm talk to/in contact with/follow on LinkedIn.

Knew I should've cut-n-pasted it! Ah well...

But yeah, "golden hour" is bro-science for sure, but it works as a quick explanation for noobs when you've only got 30 seconds, which is probably where the bros picked it up.

Hey mate, be interested if you find the article – I was *always* under the impression that a PWO shake consisting of at least protein was important to consume as close to after working out as possible until recently when my eyes were opened to the current research into it. However, I usually don’t eat for a good 2-3 hours before I end up finishing training so eating/consuming something then isn’t a bad idea… but I think the fact you *need* whey then is a myth probably being pushed by the big bods who make billions off selling whey.

I’m not saying whey is bad, far from it, just the marketing behind it should be taken with a 25g scoop of salt. As in, you could have any form of protein after training and it will not make the slightest bit of difference – what current research suggests! Hell, the protein could be as slow absorbing as 24 hours (I know that’s not possible) and it would still ‘work’ the same.

Just started using USN muscle fuel anabolic after reading positive reviews. It's not as much of a bulker as some products, but I'm hoping for some lean gains (with the right training / diet of course). Way too soon to give any feedback, but may be worth a look.

Nope give up looking for that link.

Damn my selective memory. Really good at remembering things I've read, just not where I found them!
