A metal parking bollard fell on my foot on Sunday whilst wearing sandals.

Straight away it was very painful and hard to walk on.

My middle toe turned purple and swelled up and I had trouble sleeping that night as when I rolled over I would touch it.

Te toe is still purple and the discolouration has spread to part of my foot, but the swelling has gone down and its not throbbing in pain anymore.

However, it hurts depending on how I walk or if it gets touched ina certain way.

I also can't move it like I can with the toes in my other foot.

I don't think the doctors would be able to do much on a small toe, but want to know if its broken or sprained as I want to get back to cycling & playing squash and wearing heels sooner rather than later

I'll ignore the fact that this might be a 'trick question' thread - but basically, neither you or any medical staff can know for certain that is is broken or not without an X-ray, simple as that.

A complete break might be more easy to diagnose, but any kind of fracture that isn't total is impossible.

So - obviously - if you want to know for sure, then get off to A&E and have an X-ray, ok?!

I've broken and re-broken my toe next to my big toe several time over the last few years. The first time I popped along to A & E and was told that they wouldn't x-ray as the treatment was the same for a broken or sprained toe. They strapped it to the toe next to it with some padding between the toes and sent me on my way saying a sprain would heal in 7-10 days and that a broken toe would take approximately 3 weeks.
