I think this should be here as it's health related but if it moves hey ho.

So what's your opinion on the perfect gym?

I'm going to use this as research for my business plan as well as a discussion (I'm looking to open a gym woohoo)

For me I think:
  • super heavy dumbbells (I've seen up to 100kg for sale!)
  • 5 or more power racks/cages
  • area sectioned off by 'temporary walls' for casual users/female only section
  • strongman equipment and powerlifting equipment

Sorry.

If you can somehow package that instead of a small sweaty box of mirrors and MTV you'd be onto a winner. smile

It'll essentially be a massive warehouse, around the outside you'll have a 400metre track and then inside the track you have multiple incline, decline and flat benches, power racks and dumb bells from 1-10kg in 1kg increments and from 12.5 - 100kg in 2.5kg increments, cardio equipment, and Olympic stations. Coaches would all be fully certified to talk nutrition, diet, training, Olympic lifting and sports specific training. They'll be 4 full size boxing rings with pads and bags....I'd be willing to pay £40 a month for that.

Every day! You need plenty of ventilation, clean mats and machines, separate heavy caveman area, elastic on all weights so they self return, lots of knowledgeable staff who don't pressure sell

The equipment and the changing room should be spotless.

Also the place should be full of super hot women who are there to keep slim but not muscle up! Oh, and just me! smile

Enough equipment people can get on with the workout rather than wait about. My gym is fine early doors when i go but the odd time ive been at night its a mere.

Like your idea of a women only section

Price - value for money.

If you're thinking of going the 24 hour route, don't bother. It will cause you far more hassle than it is worth unless you can afford 24 hour security

If I was building a gym for me it may sound like the OP's idea - if I was building it for profit the last thing I want is meat heads...I want row upon row of cardio gear for ladies that workout then have coffee and lunch afterwards.

The proper gym kit is pretty obvious so I'll leave that for now.

Some of the reasons I've left gyms...
TVs and music is not required; if people want music they bring mp3 player anyway.
Chilled water fountains.
Plenty of paper towels so there's no excuse to not wipe down kit.
Keep showers/changing spotless.
Clamp down on groups of more than three yoofs.
Staff on-hand to either return DBs, plates, etc to racks or ensure users do so.

Get the PTers to incorporate it into the client sessions.
"So, that was a warm up. Now you'll be doing 10 minutes of Tidying Up The Free Weights Section. GO!"

You've all said similar stuff to what I've thought. For those with children would a cresh (sp?) Make you more attracted?

The gym isn't purely for profit it's to pay for me so circa £20 month membership.

Going to be a warehouse gym likely around 4000sqft.

Mirrors on the ceiling (for bench pressing etc.)
Fans instead of aircon (hate starting out in a cold gym, much better to have cooldown areas and windows that open).
Fitness instructors who stop equipment hogging.

Interesting about the mirrors on ceiling, never seen this before. Does it help a lot?

Air con too expensive tongue out
