What say the health gurus these days?

I've been reading that full fat can be better for you than semi-skimmed, particularly when it comes to vitamins.

Full fat doesn't actually seem to be that fattening in the overall scheme of things and new research seems to suggest cholesterol in food isn't necessarily bad.

So what do we think?

What is the profit on full fat milk vs selling semi-skimmed + cream separately, do you think?

I drink full fat, btw. It's all of 4%.

Semi - it's got more protein in it over full fat.

What do I think? I think we were all led up the low-fat this, low-fat that, garden path. It all began with so-called 'healthy eating' agenda in the 1990s or around then. You only had to look over the pond at Americans where they were duped into low-fat and they all got bigger.
Then we followed like the lemmings we are.

The only time in my life I have ever put weight on (around the middle) was then, when we were sucked in and changed to skimmed or semi-skimmed, we changed from butter to all those yuk spreads that contain everything you should not put inside your mouth. I even entered McLibels and the other junk food chains in those days but only to get the freebie Mclibel cars for my kids and drank that brown sugary stuff they said was Coke (but it didn't taste like the Cokes we bought in the 50s and 60s (in glass bottles).

Then we woke up and went back to full cream, full fat. Jersey and Guernsey cows tell you everything.
So it's been Gold Top and butter and cream for years now.
If I can't get Gold Top, then Waitrose Duchy non-homogenised organic (from Somerset and Devon herds) suffices where the cream rises to the top just like the good old days in the 50s and 60s and 70s - when funnily, very few people were obese.

An important point that many people in my office haven't noticed. The thing that turns your tea or coffee milky is the fat in the milk. The less fat there is in your milk, the more milk you will use to turn the drink the colour you want because the amount of fat is constant. the same goes for virtually every other use of milk - what you are aiming for is an amount of fat, not an amount of liquid.

Unless you are drinking milk as a drink on its own, you will get little calorie loss from skimmed milk.

yes I think we're told a right load of ste in this country about what we should eat. Strange how it always ends up being the products that are cheapest to produce/most profitable to flog us...

I had been on semi skimmed for years, out of habit, but have switched back to full cream. It tastes so much nicer in my morning coffee smile
The calorie difference per coffee is tiny anyway, it's only if you are consuming large quantities that it'd make a significant difference.
IMO, processed sugar should be getting the blame for people getting fat, but everyone still goes on about fat being bad.

I get through on average 10-12 pints of full fat on my own in a week and it makes no difference to my weight (I'm not over weight), Mrs Saleen has semi skimmed.

Taste thing for me....I prefer full fat in coffee but semi skimmed in tea....and prefer semi skimmed on my cereal. I HATE skimmed milk...only time I ever have it is in coffee if it's all they have.

Sticks.

I drink at least 1pt of milk a day and always skimmed as I prefer the taste as anything else (cows) tastes fatty - even semi skimmed in tea. Don't use any more in tea btw, like it muddy.

Brought up on full fat, I suspect it doesn't make much difference which you choose for health.

Best thing about skimmed is no one nicks it from the fridge smile

Gold top, or whole milk. Has been through the filters less so still contains more of the nutrients.

Aye. Turn that food pyramid upside down if you want to eat healthily. Sugar/carbs is the problem.
