Where to start......I'm an alcoholic
Discussion
Posting this under a different ID as I know people on here and I'm too ashamed to admit who and what I am.
My life is ruled by alcohol, I have never admitted that I drink to much and that my current and previous partners are being stupid when telling me I do. Because I don't wake up and want a drink I thought I had control, I don't. I do however wake up every day and think to myself "that's it, I'm not drinking on week nights, your knackered and you look like s
t with glazed eyes" but then the evening comes, I've struggled my way through work and I think a cheeky cold beer will be enough. But then its 4-6 beers followed by just that one glass of wine as the beer is having no effect which then results in a full bottle of wine and probably another beer to wash down the acid taste.
The recent hot weather has not helped and I’ve been pushing my girlfriend into having a drink with me (Unbeknown to her or me). We have also moved house so I’ve been working hard at home to get things in order so I give myself a treat by having a beer, then the wine and then the beer – same vicious circle every day. Apart from the weekend where the limit is I keep going until I can’t keep my eyes open and I just about stumble to bed without waking the Mrs and deliberately sleeping with my back to her so she doesn’t make a disgusted sound at me because of my beer, wine and fag breath.
Last night was my first step to doing something about it, It was 10pm and I’d had several beers and wines throughout the day and enjoyed a lovely meal with my parents and girlfriend. They leave and my girlfriend stops drinking whilst I carry on. Felt pretty pissed but normally this wouldn’t stop me, went to open the fridge to have the ‘last’ beer of the night and stopped. I was stood in the kitchen leaning on the fridge door staring and asking myself if I needed it. Somehow and I have no idea how I walked away and went to bed like my girlfriend had asked me and always asks me too. I always decline though as when she’s gone to bed its drinking time for me without getting ear ache.
I don’t know where I’m going with this, I could type for ages but what I’m looking to achieve I don’t know.

First thing. What do you want to do? There isn't anything really wrong with drinking yourself to an early death. In a hundred years no-one will care. I'd aim more for Oliver Reed than Gazza, mind.
If you want to stop, it isn't that hard. It's not that addictive, physically. And help is available. THose quantities do sound alcohol dependent, so an abrupt stop might not be wise - cut it in half every three days 'til you reach one glass a night, then stop.
Then what? That's the real question.

I was you for probably decades. Nobody saw me as having a problem, least of all me as pretty much all of my friends were/are the same.
It sounds a trite quick fix but I sincerely recommend Allen Carr's Easyway to Control Alcohol.
Worst case is you've wasted a few hours reading a book.
Best case you'll have your eyes opened and alcohol is no longer an issue.
I'm not saying I've cracked it yet, but coincidentally I'm attending a clinic/seminar on Friday to finally clinch it. Best of luck.

I was almost the same as you but in smaller quantities until about 2 months ago when I thought f
k this! Mine was mostly through boredom, so now I go out cycling then come home and weight train every day after work. Doesn't bother me at all now and as a bonus my beer gut is depleting rapidly. mind over matter in my experience

Is it wrong? I would argue that it is, if you end still being over the limit and your end up having accident on your commute to work the following morning. The fallout hits others too. I've seen many people die of end stage liver disease and it's one of the worse ways to go.If you want to stop, it isn't that hard. It's not that addictive, physically. And help is available. As you state cutting down gradually is the way foward.I would go slower than this.

I want to stop the necessary drinking and be a social drinker. I've drank from an early age and have also had an excuse to use alcohol. I have been through hell in my past and alcohol was the answer. I'm now in a better place and have no excuse to drink. It is having an impact on everything I do, work, partner, my step son, how I think etc. If you want to stop, it isn't that hard. It's probably stress related as you use it to unwind rather than thinking about it as you wake up in the morning.
I'd look at other ways to fill your evenings.
I will, well thats the plan of action. But saying that the things I have been doing in the evening (I don't recall the last time I watched TV) like working on the house should be taking my mind off it. All that happens now is it delays when I start drinking but now go to bed even later. I'd look at other ways to fill your evenings.
The thing about drinking is that it's hard to actually understand the impact. Same story for me - always looking for an excuse for a cold beer. Last few days was good example, supposed to take family out on Sunday but went to mate's house on Saturday evening despite already being drunk on Thursday before. Work on Friday was a pain to get through. Anyhow Sunday was just barely survivable yet I've drank again last night. Same story, told myself it's just going to be one two beers but ended up few pints and bottle of vodka. Suffering today and reading this thread really woke me up, timing and all...
For me all that hangover feeling, "the fear" and most of all my behaviour when drunk in front of wife and kids is the biggest reasons why I want to stop. Nothing wrong with having a few cheeky drinks but there comes a time when enough is enough. It is all about the control - easier said than done but definitely something we all need to work towards.

I have hundreds of those stories. I also have horrendous stories. One being about 4 years ago when I was angry drunk the night before, I don’t recall over what (probably woman related) but the mood I woke up in when getting ready for work was like I’d been possessed. That drive to work should have had me locked up should I have been stopped, I just needed one little thing to go wrong on that journey and it would have been the end of my life and likely other lives. I got to work and straight away my colleagues gave me a wide birth and didn’t dare speak to me. Now this isn’t me at all and my colleagues are also friends so god knows what I looked like that day. A few days later when I’d sorted myself out they stressed concern but I just brushed it under the carpet and its never been spoken about again. What worries me is I had a mild case of this last week, nowhere near as bad but bad enough to worry me.

Very unlikely you can achieve this.social drinker.
This is what I've read and now my experience. You either drink or you don't - there is no halfway house once you've fallen into the trap.
Once you accept that alcohol is the cause of your problems, not the solution it's much easier to live with.

I had to get missus to drop me off today - not a good start to the week. What worries me is I had a mild case of this last week, nowhere near as bad but bad enough to worry me.
I just need to man up and learn that enough is enough. Most of the time it was because of pleasing mates and/or to feel "part of the group". Yes, it's fun while it lasted but the impact lingers on and as you have experienced unless you try to change there's a good chance of history repeating itself.
I'm going to start running again and get myself a gym membership; just need a positive distraction to keep me away from the alcohol.
Not sure how old you are or your background so hard to comment further but I do understand and offer you my support - we need to get ourselves out of this trap!
