So, I suffer occasionally with a very bloated, extended stomach that is hard to touch. I feel gassy, windy, full up, slightly sick, uncomfortable and skin on tummy feels tight.

Today I have eaten:

Home made American pancakes made wth self raising flour
Lunch was jacket potatoe with green beans, courgette and mushrooms
Snack was two mini choc chip muffin things (dead tiny) shop brought.

I started to feel bloated about four pm. What caused it?!

I was wondering about yeast?

I hAve this not often but seldomly and when I do it's very dramatic. My tummy extends from very flat to looking heavily pregnant.

But not every time I eat these things. It's odd.

I occassionally feel as you describe when I eat refined/processed carbs (white flour/pasta/rice) so I try to avoid as much as possible.

I never feel the same bloating with the wholefood equivalents.

It's water retention used by the body to store glycogen, apparently!

Wot 'e sed.

Or it might be a wheat intolerance. Cut out wheat from your diet for 2 weeks and see how you get on.

I'm going with alien, though. I saw this documentary where this guy was eating pasta noodles on a spaceship and it happened to him. Pasta is made with wheat.

Might be the quantity of gluten plus other factors such as how stressed you are. Or it might be another ingredient that you eat less frequently than wheat but is included in the wheat product.

As above, sounds like a gluten/wheat matter.

Welcome to the wonderful world of coeliac disease and / or IBS. Once the extreme bloat starts, does it end with heavy bouts of flatulence and and / or extreme diarroeha? Thankfully I don't have any food allergies or IBS, but I work with a coeliac and IBS sufferer, and they really struggle with having a strict diet to prevent flare ups and still getting a lot of grief off their guts anyway.

Wheat and yeast can have this effect, I cut down on bread especially white bread and don't suffer now.

My girlfriend suffers with something very similar.

After most meals her stomach will swell quite quickly, start to hurt and take a good 12 hours to reduce back down to a normal size.

There doesn't seem to be any particular trigger. I've suggested carbs/wheat and it still seems to happen when these are avoided. She went to the doctors a few weeks ago for blood tests, but they have found nothing wrong.

The bloating is quite extreme and can easily swell her stomach to three times it's normal size. It's firm to touch, so possibly a gas build up, but she says that she doesn't have any flatulence or diarrhoea.

As said, it doesn't seem to be a particular food group that is causing it, unless it is something very common in most foods.
