MRI scan with metal screws/plates?

Need some advice;

I've got what is suspected to be a herniated disk in my spine. I've received an appointment letter for an MRI scan and it asks whether I've ever had surgery involving screw/plates implanted.
I had maxillofacial surgery when I was 18yr (I'm now 30yrs) and was lead to believe that they fixed my jaw with screws and plates.

So can I have the scan or will my jaw get ripped off by the massive killer magnet?!?

Ive been told that the magnets are so powerful they can magnetise even non magnetic metals.
Possible?

My understanding is things get hot in an MRI scanner. They don't rip them out of your head (as cool as it would be). More important is the fact they will interfere with the images.

Just tell them and they'll make a decision whether it's safe to proceed.

I had an MRI with a right leg and hip full of metal and they scanned my left and right hip with no problems. Wise to let them know though. (Tell them at least twice)
Oh and my head scanned with lots of gold crowns, the crowns were a bit firework like in the results.

I've had 3 MRI's with screws in my jaw with no problems

I've got a lot of titanium in and around my spine and pelvis and have had an MRI since. Not sure what the situation is re steel.

One would assume the radiographer has to be 100% certain over such things so if they give you the go ahead they'd only do so after carrying out the relevant checks.

Thanks for the replies. I called up the hospital today and they said it'll be fine.
