As the title states, what if any Pre-workout do you use. I personally use them for normally around three months then have a month or so off, which is where I am now so looking for a new Pre-workout to use. I have previously used three differant ones which i have listed below and my own feelings on each, any thoughts much appreciated.

Reflex Performance Matrix - Mixed terrible, tasted like a muddy puddle, just had to down in one go. Didn't feel much during weight sessions but for cardio I was like forest gump, i just kept going! In the end due to the taste and my main workout is weights i stopped using it.

Jack 3d (old style, with the now banned substance) - really liked it, good value for money, good taste, lasted for nearly a month on one tub just using one scoop and felt like i was going to tear the bar in two. Have not tried the new recipe so curious to see what people think. Did occasionally make you feel like your heart was going to leave your chest so probably best they banned it!

No explode- good mix of both the above. Felt good for cardio and weights but not to the extreme. Taste a bit strong but easy enough to drink, did have a tendency to make you a bit windy! Reasonable value and did last quite a while. This is the one i am thinking of going for again.

Grenade .50 cal- only tried a sample of this and really did not like it. Flavour was a bit rubbish, but felt it had far too much caffeine, just made me really jittery and big come down after.

There my personal reviews, thanks for any reply.

Not had PWO's for a while. I found them too expensive and I found it difficult to sleep at night.

They are beneficial for training but people get too reliant on them I think.

Agree with you on people become stuck on them. I think its just a psychological thing in that people think i only lifted that because of the PWO so are afraid to come off of it. One of the reasons i like to detox for at least a month after using them. I normally work out first thing in the morning so the sleep thing doesn't really affect me.

I would have a cup of cappuccino, with an extra shot if I'm feeling bold.

Interesting, a lot of love for the natural option. Have you tried PWO and dont like them? Or just prefer not to take anything? From the people i kow there is defo a big debate between whether you should take them or not.

Shot of espresso, glass of water.

The only active ingredient in the legal pwo supplements is caffeine in most cases.

BCAA if training fasted. Otherwise lots of water and a coffee.

Haven't taken protein or anything else apart from BCAA perhaps once a fortnight if training fasted, for around 2 years now. I lift heavy and have still made progress, I truly believe it's all in the mind, and these supplement manufacturers don't help by making a bloody supplement drink for every activity we do these days including sleeping!. I also had a look into what they put into these things which also turned me against them.

I now stick to getting my protein from natural sources like chicken, a little red meat, nuts, spinach, broccoli and plenty fruit etc. I look and feel much better for it, sleep great and have more energy as my body isn't working overtime to get rid of all the toxins found in processed food and said supplements.

If I was to have any supplement it would only be post workout and nothing else. Don't get me wrong if I was competing I would take whatever was going, but why put that st into your body if you just want to pack on a bit of muscle?

Oh and guess what? for the past 2 years I've also stopped passing wind every 5 minutes and embarrassing myself in social situations!

Just read my post and it does come across a bit holier than thou. I did use lots of protein for around 14 years, just glad I've now seen the light and saved a fortune.

Nothing at all.

I'm doing early morning fasted cardio sessions 4 times a week and the results have been very good.

I thought I would struggle doing it on an empty stomach but have had no issues at all.

Fruit is useful, I don't look to it for protein.

The young lads at the gym all love their preworkouts. Children. biggrin

I try and eat as much real food as possible, but at work protein powders rule. Also sometimes my appetite goes and they help there too.

I've also gone in for BCAA and also creatine mono as well, I doubt I'll buy anymore, but after reading some articles I decided I would experiment with a boost when getting back into it.

I do weights and cardio and in fairly good shape. Don't use any supplements or protein drinks. Don't believe in them, Good nutritional meals, eggs milk/lattes, nuts and the obvious stuff is all you need. Will have a red bull from time to time. Alcohol a big no no. You might as well not bother with supplements if your drinking vast amounts of alcohol. You'll piss all the goodness out of your body.;-)

I work shifts and it would be normal that I don't get to eat during my shift, plus means that my main meals are all over the place. If i do get to eat it is very much on the go and would not be a good nutritional meal, so I frequently take protein shakes to make sure I get the required amount. When I'm off or so, then I will just plan my meals and won't really take the shakes.

As for pre-workouts i normally dont use them however i find they do make a big differance to my workouts on the day. Whether it is just psychological or is actually the pre workout i dont know.

Every pre-workout I've has never done anything for me, no mental or physical boost, even doubling the recommended dose. The only thing that has had any effect at all was Jack3d, the banned one, which did nothing until half way through a weight session and then my heart started somersaulting around my chest.

Only supplement I take is protein.

If you are doing weights seriously, unless you have the body of an Ethiopian marathon champ it must be a struggle to get the requisite protein a day for proper growth and recovery. If you are an average athletic build starting weight lifting, say 13 stone of body weight, that;s 182g of protein a day. 100g of chicken or a tin of tuna only has about 20g. Not saying it can't be done, but eating animal protein is an expensive, time consuming and gruelling way of doing it, especially when there are protein formulas out there offering 30g of protein per serving at a cost of about 40p/scoop.
