Sleep Monitors
Discussion
There was a Horizon programme on a few weeks back about fitness trackers. They talked about the sleep monitors you can now get on smart phones and wristbands. They didn't really tell you what the point of them is though. I know if I have had a s
t nights sleeps because I either a) can't get to sleep, b) keep waking up or c) feel like s
t in the morning. Or all of the above.
What is the point? Just wondering as my sleep has been awful recently. Can't get to sleep, waking up etc.

I used one a few years ago, it was an iPhone app.
Basically, you set a time for it to start and place it face down on your mattress, somewhere near your pillow. It then plots a graph over the course of the night apparently highlighting what stage of your sleep cycle you are at based on your movement.
I have no idea how accurate they are, it basically told me that I have 2 stages during the night where I am almost fully awake again.
Some of them also come with a built in alarm clock that gradually wakes you up when you are at the lighest stage of your sleep pattern. This is supposed to make you feel more awake than a sudden alarm noise.
No idea if they actually work. I can't really remember if I felt any different.
ETA - Regarding the sleeping issue. I assume you stop having any caffeine after 3pm? I tend to find a hot bath makes me fairly sleepy. If I really need to get an early night, I tend to go to bed an hour before I need to sleep. That way I toss and turn for an hour before my actual sleep time.

I don't touch caffeine after lunch generally. Usually have a 3-4 strong cups of coffee in the morning and maybe a diet coke at lunch.
I try to do plenty of exercise to tire me but in the last week I just can't seem to drop off. I am not lying awake things about things or worrying. I seem to go into this partial sleep mode where I am not awake but I am still aware that I am not actually asleep. Also feels like I am dreaming but am awake. Odd. Last night I woke twice in the night for no reason.
