Mud Running

Following the Tough Mudder thread, I thought it might be interesting to start a more general thread where we can share experiences, recommend other similar events etc.

After completing Tough Mudder South West on 21st September a few members of my crew are now up for doing the Monster Race in Wiltshire in November - you can choose 5k or 10k so we're thinking it may be a stroll in the park in comparison - anyone done one of these before?

Also looking at Spartan and Rock Solid Race as well as Mudder next year

Im not a expert but my mate does a lot of runs like this. Dont do it in normal trainers apparently. Think he said trail shoes ( think thats what they are called ) were lots better for grip.

I did TM in some trail shoes. They might make a bit of difference on hard soil/rocks etc. but in proper mud I was still sliding all over the show. These ones: http://www.sportsdirect.com/new-balance-330-mens-t...

They're pretty cheap but they have very similar soles to more expensive ones.

If you want ultimate mud grip, you need Inov8 Mudclaws but they are brutal on your calves.

I use Salomon Fellcross - not quite as grippy but incredibly comfortable.

I have Salamon SpeedCross 3 CS and they are excellent, super grippy, comfortable (even for a flat-footer like me) and look cool as well (unlike the Inov8s).

If anyone can recommend decent mud running around West London I would appreciate it (although I'm not hopeful!).

You tried the Brutal series? They seem to be mostly out near me ie Ascot, Camberley, Farnborough etc. 10k runs so should be piss easy for you

22s; the Fellcross shoes are basically the Speedcross (which I had) but a little ore focused; less heel drop, slightly more mud grip, lighter and more durable. Worth a look; they are cracking shoes.

Did a Spartan Sprint - massively fun, but not a huge challenge (say, compared to the half marathon i did 6 weeks later)

I plan to do the Rat Race Dirty Weekender again next year. 20 miles, 200 obstacles.

I wore my Inov8 Mudclaws this year and suffered a bit as there was quite a lot of running on paths/roads.

Still, managed the 20 miles, just.
