My Slimming World Jouney
Discussion
So at the start of this year I was dragged to a SW meeting by my ex...I didn't want to go...I was a 6ft 2 rugby build type and I thought I was happy.
However, the scales told me I weighed 24 stone. At the age of 25 this shocked and alarmed me as you can imagine.
I have been determined to lose as much as possible. Since the 3rd week of January 2013 I have lost five and a half stone!
Anyone want to see photos?!

Well done that's excellent! I am considering becoming a consultant as their arnt many men doing it!
Good stuff for both of you! However, better still, spread the fairly simple messages of genuine lifestyle change (diet & at least some reasonably intense @ whatever level exercise now and again) rather than any of that stuff.
Don't doubt it works for some and is probably a decent+ guide, but perfectly possible without.
Sorry for what seems like a downer, but always an element of money for old rope.
Yes it is money for old rope, but if you are like me you need the motivation of old rope to do it! I started with Slimming World and have lost 1.5 stone over 3 months. For me, it is the weigh-in that motivates me......if Id realised that id have done it years ago!
It is one of the more balanced and sensible 'diets' that I have come across. I also have been running 3 times a week so that has helped me too. I would encourage anyone who struggles with weight loss and who hasn't tried slimming world, to give it a go.

I know where you're coming from, but at the same time, the real motivation is hitting the point of no return (whatever that may be for each individual), actually realising what you do wrong & making a lifestyle change (however hackneyed that might sound), rather than following any particular diet in the short to medium term.It is one of the more balanced and sensible 'diets' that I have come across. I'd also suggest that seeing results count far more than scales in the longer term - nothing better than seeing at least some wobbly bits disappear & having to throw way stuff you bought when you rid yourself of the first bit of chunk. Better still, keep some clothes from full fat days & get scared at what you used to be like.
FWIW, I'd actually like to go up again, but that needs me to join that gym thingy.
However, I guess these kind of things give people an easy to swallow/follow bite size view of things, even if they cost money and it really is better than nothing, even if it often doesn't work in the longer term or could be achieved+ for nowt.
I'd encourage anyone who struggles with weight loss to listen to many people on here who know somewhere between a little and lots, hell, even little old me. Even I have a little knowledge of what works - I guess not that representative (or maybe?) but mate of mine was you, lost decent weight by doing pretty much the same. I can't run, never been to any diet club & haven't been in a gym for a long time, yet I've been far more successful than he has. Not going to be a Men's Health cover model any time soon, but from where I was & what I do/don't do at times, I'm a reasonably happy bunny (and around 60% of the man I once was

That's brilliant, well done! Would love to see some piccies!
If that was aimed in my direction, I'm very allergic to pictures
, always have been, fat or thin(ish).Problem with doing the food & a bit of exercise route is that you don't get that Men's Health look. Still, way, way better than wearing 42" jeans - when slightly generous 32" are a bit loose (or should that be lose here
), not that bad.DukeDickson said:

I've lost 2kg in the last 2 weeks, I think a combo of not having a car, not able to easily pick up a bottle of wine after work, swimming everyday and drinking shed loads of water.
Have signed up for belly dancing and burlesque class this week, should be a laugh!

2kg in 2 weeks is probably above going rate -

If you're not that active (like me
), diet (as in long term) is the killer/saviour. Can't remember a w/end in recent times when I haven't had a few cheeky ones, but I make up for it Mon - Fri.I could give something of a Barry Bethel shot, I guess, not that it is that exciting - err. Chest isn't my strong point, back works better(ish).
ETA -- There really is no need for this kind of stuff - If I can shift the equivalent of a small woman without help, anyone can lose it.

Will be interested to see some before/after photos and what it all involved. I am too a similar weight to what you started at and around the same height. I know I need to lose weight, I want to lose weight but as I find the motivation.. I lose the will power. I just love food too much. Im not lazy by any means. I do drive a van all day but I am in and out of it lifting etc, and when weather permits I always cycle to work, very rare I sit on my arse as I am always out.
I'd love to join a group, but too ashamed/embarrassed/shy to.

No need. I sit on my rear all day, every day, yet I managed to do it. Yes it has taken far longer than it can be done in, but I don't go to the gym, work long hours, still sup far too much booze etc. So, I understand why it has been slow progress.I'd love to join a group, but too ashamed/embarrassed/shy to.
It sounds like you probably eat a host of crap & drink a touch too much, at a guess. Don't doubt it tastes good (and I'd probably enjoy it as well
), but it isn't doing you any good. I guess the other thing is probably rather generous portion sizes.Try something like MyFitnessPal for a week or three, record everything you eat and drink (and be brutally honest) then have a look at what you've logged. You're eating & drinking too much will be the outcome.
Then you need to adjust the diet. I guess it might not be easy if van based, but will be possible somehow. Do that, keep the activity levels up, do a bit of exercise at somewhere near max effort (whatever that may be), be patient & committed and it will happen.
TBH, if I can manage it (without outside influence beyond trying to pick up decent advice), pretty much anyone can. However, perhaps the biggest things will be some short to medium term commitment & seeing results. Plus a little fear

Also helps when a selfish action kicks other people into doing something, which it seems mine has.
FWIW, it has taken a long time, but I've gone from 128kg to @ 82kg. Probably need to get down to 70 something and then go back up to 80 - 85 (at a guess), but a non flabby version.
Nice results. But here's the hard bit, can you keep it up until you're about 13st?
Don't give stuff like wonder/sole dieting too much credit. Simple good eating and being active will have even more drastic results, and of course the real point - will be longer lasting or even permanent. Diet alone will not get you fit, healthy or even down to a good weight without sacrificing your internal organs, brain and muscles.
What these places expect is this; You have huge amounts of weight to lose, you lose a lot of it fast, but not all. You stall, lose interest, give-up. Because you haven't taught your body how to burn calories, when the weight inevitably comes back on, you go back to the franchise that appeared to work... £££
This is the case for 2/3's of people. So the question is, do you want to take on and beat the stats?
There's far too much media lead mass-hysteria associated to dieting...
