Not sure the poing in this thread really but just after some advice and encouragement I suppose.

Haven't been to the gym for a few years and decided I am fed up and want to get fitter again, bike and a bit of bulking up.

Anyaay going for an induction on thursday so just wondering if anyone had any recommendations about times per week etc. I was thinking about starting for three times a week fof about 45 minutes to an hour each time along with dog walking twice a day.

Would thid be overdoing it for a start or would thhis be ok?

Also I like cooking and eating, so any nice simple foods to get some energy going.

Thanks all

Depends on goals, I do 4 times a week and 1.5 - 2hrs a session smile
You'd need to post diet so PH can abuse you for not eating properly hehe

Well abuse away. Normally breakfast is some cereal, tends to be some nut clusters with semi-skimmed milk
. Lunch if I'm at work is some sandwiches choclate bar couple of bits on fruit and possabley bag of crisps, if I'm at home i tend to skip lunch.

When I get home tend to have a snak of anything I can find toast with something.

Dinner then is a reasonable sized meal normally with a meat and veg or salad.

Dont tend to have a routeen of what gets eaten when so hard to put it down.

My gym goal is to bulk up a bit, look reasonably toned rather than a bit chubby. As well be able to ride/run rwasonable distances with out getting knackered. (Run about hakf marathon distances and cycle 100 miles at a reasonable steady pace, not necessarily in the same day!)

I would start with this to find your resting metabolic rate: http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/calrmr.htm
Then add a good 1000cals on top of that to take into account exercise. That'll roughly tell you what you want daily. Perhaps use myfitnesspal to log daily intake to help you achieve your goals.

As you're bulking but don't want to gain fat I'd google a lean bulk - this takes longer than bulking and cutting which achieves the same result.

Food wise I'll leave that to experts on here, my diet is completely different as I have different aims and I can only advise to someone with similar goals smile

Sort your diet out - read lots of stuff on here. Because nutty cereal and sandwhiches wont help you!

And get a VERY clear idea of what you want to look like - do I read it right that you are chubby now? If so, wanting to bulk up may not be ideal, you'll just be big and fat! The vast majority of people, even those wanting to be "bigger" look a whole lot better with less body fat. It's quite possible to drop weight and look bigger.

Thats the cereal and samdwitches out then, will start doing salads and pasta? That kind of thing and see how it goes.

I will admit to being a bit chubby yes, not fat exacxtly. Wil, start with loising a bit of weight then before I go too mad with any weights then biggrin. Thanks

I forgot to factor in work aswell, I'd say aim for 3500ish cals for a bulk and you can't go wrong, then adjust as necessary if you're bulking to quick/slow

Be strict with yourself...chubby is fat! There is no good look that goes with being chubby! It's like people who say "I have a rugby build" = fat or "I'm 6ft5 so 19 stone is ok" = fat!!!!

Seriously, dropping fat is easier than adding muscle and will help you look a LOT better quicker...and that will motivate you to add size if needed.

Stand in front of the mirror...any hint of stomach muscles? I dont meana full on 6 pack...just a hint that there may be something lurking there? If not = fat.

Ok then well yes I did play rugby until I moved, hopefully when fitness and strength builds up I will start again next season.

Im about 5"8 and 13ish stone so ok got a bit of fat on me. There isn't much muscle so yes fat. Would put a pic up but would probabley askibg for humiliation! biggrin

Right going for the dropping weight before adding muscle now then. Thanks for the advice and a bit of a shove in the right direction.

Well I went and did my induction, found out that weight whys I was 84.5kg and 170cm. Body fat aas calculated by a strange little white thing that was held at arms length and came back with 28%.

Only managed the cardio equipment today so going to try and do an hour per time at least splitting that between rower, runner, cycling and the cross trainer. Doing that three times a week at the srart and mix in a few weights when I'm inducted on them.

Whether doing mostly CV is good for weight loss is a debate that others can have with you (and no doubt will wink )but it is interesting that you (like SOOOO many men) think you need to bulk up to look better when you are one third fat! Great that you have come round to the dropping fat route instead......trust me, you will look 1000 times better. 6 weeks at 28% and you will look transformed if you do it right.....if you go for bulking up, after 6 weeks you will just look fatter!

yes there are muscles hiding under the fat. Get rid of some/most of the fat and then decide if you want to have bigger muscles or not.

Thanks again. Decided to take the advice given and work on the cv more rather than the weights. Will try and work on the diet also so by x mas I should hopefully be on my way to looking good :-)
