Crosstrainer help (mechanical or electrical problem)

Hi folks,
I bought a Nordictrack cxt1400 off ebay about a year ago and have been very happy with it until recently.
Either I've suddenly got MUCH fitter (#cough# not #cough#) or there's a problem with the resistance on the machine. While you can definately feel the rsistance increase slightly between steps, until recently level 7 or just about 8 (out of 10) was the highest I could push and tonight I was pushing 8 with no trouble and 9 with little extra. 10 was still really really solid though! Also, sometimes it feels like something is slipping a bit from time-to-time - it just seems easier for 2 or 3 revolutions - or maybe I'm just hitting the "zone" briefly
On disconnecting the arms and turning the flywheel by hand, I can hear the motor turning to set the resistance, but then still hunting for some time after. On looking at the manual, I see there's a resistance motor, a drive belt and a big C magnet and variuos pulleys and idlers all of which presumably have something to do with the resistance level, but I've got no idea at all how it all works and what might be the cause of any problems. Most of the parts appear to be available (in America at least) although the price on some is a bit spicy when I only paid a hundred quid for the machine in the first place!
Any ideas folks?

Just in case anyone searches this:
Took it apart, definately the motor unit; the pulley that pulls the wire thats ets the resisitance wasn't seating properly on the potentimeter (sp?) that seems to tell the machine it's in the right place. Pulled that back into place and it stopped hunting back and forth once it has moved. The wire needed adjusting too, so I gues the whole thing has ended up in a slightly different place than it started. All seems to be working OK for now though, easy enough fix for anyone vaguely handy with a screwdriver.
